You're welcome. I just took the idea off ih8mud and did a write-up. I'm not sure who we should thank for the initial idea. :)

Good info thank you. When i click my 88 fj62 in h4 it engages all four wheels are locked in, but when i go from h4 to l4 4wd doesn't engage i only have the rear wheels working. The 4wd display lights up and then turns off during shifting to h4, can you help me out please.thanks.

I have never heard of the 4wd light going off when going from low to high. The vacuum solenoid valves hold it in place until you manually push the button. Get under your truck while it is in park and the parking brake is on. You will know you are in 4wd hi and 4wd lo if you can not turn the front driveshaft with your hand.

Please clarify your question for me.

I'm pretty sure it's in the case. Either that or connected to the mechanical linkage in one way or another. The switch allows current to go to the 4WD solenoid when you shift into low range, hence automatically shifting to 4WD at the same time......as long as the solenoids are working

Seems that you may have some connection problems at the tcase, either mechanical or electrical.

vacuum selenoid

thanks for replying. when i click on the H4 button my 4wd display lights up and all 4 WHEELS are locked in , then when i switch from H4 TO L4 THe 4wd light display turns off and only my rear wheels are locked in , basically i have no 4 wheel drive when switching from h4 to 4L. thanks.

Thanks for the thread. Ordered three (replace both with new, and got a spare). Will be in tomorrow!

Maybe I'm being incredibly dense but what's the purpose of the 4WD button if shifting activates the solenoids?

if you don't mind me asking, where did you buy your vsv's from. thanks.
t
Went to my local Toyota dealership (Gresham, OR). Will have them tomorrow.

thanks for replying, what exactly did you ask for so i can approach my local dealer for the same part or part number, thank you.

Fisrt post, 4th line down:

4WD VSV Replacement: Toyota P/N 88690-89132

STUPID SIMPLE
(about a 25% :wrench: project)

About the only thing you missed is that you need to reuse the new valve's phillips screw that holds the little bracket that you will be discarding.

Found that my bench grinder gave me a perfect lip, but it really wasnt needed as the phillips screw holds the valve plenty well.

Other than that...simple as pie!
Again, thanks!

it seems my 4wd gave up on me all together; so i went out and picked up a 4wd selenoid from my local dealer (for 32 bucks), i put it in and seems to be working although i have no 4wd light. could it be the bulb's burnt out? does the 4wd light have to be on for my 4wd to function properly? thanks guys, sorry for the ditzy questions!!

It is possible for the bulb to burn out but unlikely. The way to check is to push the 4WD button in (on position) and get under your truck and try and turn the front driveshaft. If it is locked then you are in 4WD. Then push the button to the off position (out) and try to spin the front driveshaft. It should be able to be turned now. If you can do both of those then your 4WD works and the bulb is likely burnt out.

The short answer: No, your 4WD light does not have to be on to function properly but since it's out it should be addressed as it's an easy fix. The bulb can be accessed by unscrewing the dash and removing some of the panels. Takes about 15 min going slow.

There are no ditzy questions, keep asking until you understand the system.

4wd

thanks again, i went out and did what you described and all checked out well. now for the bulb!!:grinpimp:

Eldest daughter (w/62) informed me a little while ago that her 4WD light is staying on. She used the 4WD earlier this week. I did the ol' switcheroo between the lines to get it to disengage/turn off the light...and tomorrow I'll order up a couple of these to fix it and to have a few spares on hand. Thanks a lot Randy for the find and write up

that would be me and my Toyota parts guy :)

he dug up the same(similar) part from a Celica for me 3 or so years ago, can use them for all kinds of stuff, AC, 4x4 etc, other day the AC selnoid craped out on my 60, went over and pulled the celica part of of the box.....fixed.

when I posted the part #, most guys dealers could not get it, but mine had no problem, under $20

I'll dig up the part # I used.....

from a 91 Celica
