Going to see the machinist I used for the top end now. Honestly over the phone he gave me the old school response... ‘if it’s not detectable by your finger nail and the block is smooth you can probably file that out.’ 100 degrees w/ some disgusting humidity level and last thing I want to do is drive 20+ minutes one way but I know he knows FAR better than me and I’d rather his eye and hands be on it before I make some cheap decision.

Got this thing up and running too. It works well other than if I give it too much pressure it looses steam... 120v and garage is 110v so I understand. Trimming a washer for grabbing the lip of the bearing to help aid in pushing them out.

Number 2 block bearing space... smooth and oil transfer hole visible.

That's cool, and given the low power low rev nature of a 2F it could go for years. I had a noisy, oilburning, low compression 76 2F that went 10 years before finally spinning the #5 rod bearing in the hills outside of Hawthorne, Nevada. The crankshaft from that motor now lives on at Crankshaft junction in Death Valley.

But next time you have problems like this, rebuild the motor, or install a used one that's still running well.

ANd looking through the pics, why does the #1 bearing look so beat up? Are you replacing that one too?


Edit: And it's funny that the more you look, the more questionable stuff you will find. Which is why when you get to this stage, an engine rebuild is an opportunity, not a fail, $$ aside. I am running a 240K 2F in my FJ60. It runs great, no oil use etc. But I'm afraid to even do a compression test. Because once you know something is wrong, you can't rest until you've spent $5k on an engine rebuild or $15k on an LS swap! Hang in there, I'm turning over the garage today and will look for a spare 2F Camshaft for you. I may have purged it when I installed the new shelving, but if it's there, I'll contribute it to the cause. Good luck and hang in there.

Yes planning on doing 1-3 if all goes well. Going to get my son so much will be on hold until the weekend unless this heat breaks and my son is distracted.

So I felt like Indiana Jones and Geraldo Rivera at the same time but came up with this in the Land Cruiser cave. You need? Looks to be in perfect shape. Say the word and I'll get it to you somehow.

And if things really get desperate, I also have a good crankshaft in there. Both from an 85 taken out for a Chevy swap.

Well, thank the beer gods they are not Jags! But Land Rovers are basically the equivalent. But sadly no gear. Strangely, I remember having that gear, but it likely got recycled. If I ever rebuild a 2F (highly doubtful as I'd rather go domestic) I'd want a solid metal gear, not the 2 piece/rubber elastomer stock gear.

Some odd circulating metal in that engine. But, fortunately, the 2F is forgiving, and this one will likely live on. It's a reminder though, that these engines are on the downside of their functional lives and sh#t happens.

The piece of metal in the red circle is the crank shaft. That other copper coloured thing isn’t a thing. It’s light shining from below.

Take the free cam. As long as none of your lifters have a concave wear pattern it will be mostly ok. Pour some of your zddp additive right on the lifters before you drop them in.
