So, My wipers work but not as well as I'd like. I only have the one speed ,fast I think. What have others done to improve their function?

Well, you should have 3 speeds. So I guess try to address why you only do fast mode. I bought new wipers from napa and nothing special but I dont have an issue with the wiping other than maybe wanting intermittent wiping would be cool.

3 speeds? I thought it was 2. When I pull the lever out I get 2 clicks. The first is slow (no action there) and the second is fast, that one works. Is there any maintenance to the motor or the wiper arm posts that someone has done? just seems to strain a little when working. I live at 9000' in CO and the snow is an issue.

Yeah, there is plenty you can do for the wipers, but it is involved a bit. All the arms have small bushings that get corroded. Take them apart and clean/lube them. The motor is similar to the tailgate motor, the grease gets old and caked, so clean and relube. By the way it also has a plastic gear. maybe your switch is corroded or shot, I'd replace with a new one.

Or buy some Rain-X :)

How much under the dash did you have to pull out to access the thing? I new this would not be easy.

Hard to say the least amount. I had it all stripped out at the time, redoing the body. I know the gauges, glovebox and center panel will have to come out, so pretty much all of it.

Thought about starting a thread at some point that was aimed at upgrading the wiper system. @abqcruiser came up with a two-motor system controlled via an ECM.
I’ve been trying to find some pieces that work together to run a larger wiper-arm drive shafts. The OEM 55 pieces are super small in diameter but long, and the splines on the end are getting smooth after all these years. Later model GM pickup wiper arm driveshafts are almost as long as the 55’s (about a 1/2” shorter), but probably double the diameter. It would just be a matter of finding an outer hub/shaft threaded for adjustment and then being able to have the corresponding splined (or maybe softer metal but smooth) female insert on the wiper arm side that would work with the stock arm (or one of similar length).
I think the 3-bolt plate could be drilled out easily enough to accept a larger outer shaft.

Just spitballing here, but couldn't you cut and splice the two together in order to get a longer GM fully threaded shaft.

Could you use the 55 housing, etc. and just have the GM end welded to everything (simplified explanation).

I see where you’re going. Cut the end of the larger GM shaft, drill or turn out a bit on the cut side, fit it over the LC shaft and weld it.(?) That could work, not sure if it would become a weak spot with the possibility of it breaking there (or just below). I also don’t know if you’d be able to remove the inner shaft from the outer if you ever needed to since the bottom is splined (not sure if that end would fit through the outer shaft?).
Need a parts wiper arm assembly to experiment with 🤔
