Evidently the PO had my windshield glass replaced and the installer did not glue the glass into the seal. It squeaks like crazy when I go over bumps. However, it doesn't leak.

Open question.
I just spent 30 mins talking shop with a local glass guy. Showed him the FSM. He looked me like I was crazy, as in like d'uh of course you do it this way, but a lot of installers won't because it's messier.

He seems to know how to replace these. He showed me the process he uses on another "classic car" he's doing in his shop.

And he loves doing these, vs newer glue down types.

He did say, the draw back of the gasket is that it is only as good as the trueness of the frame. If the frame is tweaked due to accident or old age, the install can squeak or leak.

Rings true to me. Right?

He gave me two price options.
OEM glass and gasket + install for $887

Or aftermarket for $400

Worth the OEM.
Is OEM glass even avail?

Thanks.

Anyone have a source for the sikaflex or sunstar primer? Or equivalent?

I never did see a response to this. Does anyone know of equivalent replacements for these?

I know your location says bay area so this might not help but incase you drop by socal, Alfredo's auto glass in corona, ca did mine. He is very knowledgeable about the FSM installation procedure. He even explained it to me even before I had the chance to bring up the FSM procedure. Mine is all aftermarket and I guess as long as the procedure is followed, it should be fine.
Thanks ARB777,
I read your above post sometime ago, and took note-
Alfredo just did my 97’ 80 (July 9, 2019).
I couldn’t have been happier with the whole process.
Factory Toyota seal, aftermarket glass, well versed with the FSM procedure (as noted)

Who did you get to install the windshield? Aftermarket or OEM? I am in SF bay area and looking for a reputable installer.

I had Safelite do the work. Whoever you choose, make sure you check it and have them come back if it leaks. I had to have Safelite come back once, but it's leak-free now.

I got mine replaced, I provided the oem gasket and the fsm instructions to the glass shop, they admit they didn't follow the instructions, I've been to the shop 5 times and it still leaks with light snowfall.
I really don't know what to do.

I too provided the OEM gasket and the written instructions to the glass shop. They did it right, following the instructions and I have no leak. They provided the glass. The shop I took it too had a good reputation and reviews. It was surprisingly cheap. For me, I'd rather go to the small guy than to Safelite. No real reason why, I just prefer the independent to the big corporate guy.

@Cruzerman do you happen to be in the Portland area by chance? If so, would you mind sharing the shop name? I've got a new gasket in the mail and am in need of a replacement windshield.
Thanks!

Hey Mud members, I just had a new windshield put in and need to seal the lip. Did anyone ever decide what the best adhesive to use is. I keep reading conflicting info between using Urethane or Polybutylene

Does anyone know off the top of their head if the 3M urethane sealant above works for the rear window too? I need to replace my gasket.

I've wanted a new front glass in my 80 for a few years but resisted. The existing one is non-OEM (I didn't think that OEM front glass existed anymore), but I do have a new rubber seal waiting (acquired about 5 yrs ago though). I don't know enough about the Toyota part code labels to know how to tell (if it's even possible) the 'age' of a part ie. when it was manufactured and bagged up to go into the distribution chain. Most of us don't have any access to internal toyota parts inventory systems.
