McMaster-Carr. It is very supple. It is also kind of thin walled. I plan on putting a rubber hose around it or something to protect it.

Just had to clean up the shop a bit before I left this morning. What better place to store the doors than on the body?

So here's some better pics...

The painted stuff. (either I've gotten better at painting, or I got better at taking pics of the pieces)

And just for fun I pulled the masking off of the body. The Medium Quartz (IIRC) Monstaliner looks awesome with the 6L4! Which is good, because the lower trim line will be "painted" in the same Monstaliner, and I think the colors look great together.

While I waited for the paint to cure, I bent up some of the new fuel lines. These are 10mm lines--to match the 1HZ's inlet hose size.

The 1HZ has a fuel inlet on the left side of the engine, so this routing should move the fuel lines to the left side, and keep they away from hot exhaust. I went with aluminum lines, but they will be well secured so I won't worry about work hardening much at all. Yes, that is two fuel lines coming from approximately the same spot. One line comes from the stock fuel tank, and the other comes from the aux fuel tank. The selector value will be mounted to the framerail right where they terminate in this pic, and a single line will continue to the engine itself.

I need to order some matching 6mm lines to fabricate the same routing for the fuel return lines too, but I will get to that when I get to work on the truck next. You can see the nice beaded ends on the fuel lines? Oh baby that kind of detail makes me happy. I also have matching Viton fuel lines to connect all of the metal lines together. (Viton, BTW, is pricey stuff, but someday I might be running pure bio, or WVO or something, so now is the time to replace the sofa lines with Viton)

It's not supposed to do stainless, and it's supposed to be limited to thin wall mild steel.

But my guess is that it can do thin wall stainless. The presser applied it dependent entirely upon the operator, so you could just go super slow with a lot of lube and I'll bet it would be fine. I have some leftover stainless tubes somewhere in the shop, I will probably give it a test if I can find them.

Yeah sounds just like what I have, cuts like butter and I'm too scared to use it for the oil and fuel lines I had planned.

Man this looks great! Did you build a booth or just spray it outside?

Neither. I just sprayed it inside the shop. As soon as it tacked up, I let the heaters rip and got it all kinds of warm. I also used reducer for moderate temperatures (55-70 degrees) which is about what it was in the shop anyway.

Outside is too hard to keep bugs, dirt, etc... from blowing into the paint. Inside there's no real airflow when I spray, and as soon as it's tacked up I get the heaters on and get the air circulating. Seems like it worked real well.

....but someday when I build my shop in CO, I will include a dedicated painting booth. It would be ever better than having a nice big shop to spray in.

Tomorrow I should nearly finish the painting (front doors, lift gate and front valance).

But I needed to set the fenders somewhere, so.....

And just to see the 6L4 with the snorkel...

I love this color more and more every day!

Dan

Today I did indeed spray the color on the front doors, lift gate, and front valance.

Then I got out some pretty trick little masks that I had made from a very nice guy in Moab....
IMG_3120.webp

Note to self: yellow looks pretty cool against the 6L4. No idea what I might do with that information, but it really does look pretty cool.
IMG_3124.webp

Then I used a crap ton of masking tape and paper....
IMG_3126.webp

Then out came the black paint.

Pretty cool right?

WRONG!

Not cool enough.

A little bit of grey...

Masking removed (yes, you can see that some overspray got under the masking somehow--but cleaned up with a little wax and grease remover).
IMG_3135.webp

And then it was time for clear coat...

And here's an overall shot of the door. It really looks nice and understated (the grey-black fade) under the clear coat. I'm a very happy guy tonight with that job done.

There are three of the "Turbo" logos. One on each door, and one on the right side of the rear lift gate.

Tomorrow I will give the inside of the lift gate it's coat of clear, and maybe we will even be able to finish up with the painting. All that remains is the front core support and the lower tailgate. The tailgate was actually damaged a lot more than we could tell, but I think I'll just put some icing on it and repaint it for now. If I decide I can't stand that later, I can buy another one and paint it 6L4 to match the rest of the truck. Most of it will be hidden behind the swing out tire carrier and stuff anyway, so I very well may not care once it's on there. At least it's rust free.

The front core support is waiting for me to finish fabricating the front mount intercooler bracketry, so that I can cut the holes in the core support for the intercooler piping.

Interesting. Can you wet sand over those?

Wait, they're paint so I guess you could! Make sure you get a TON of clear over those before you start wet sanding or you'll take them off.

3 coats. Will put another 2 over them tomorrow.

All the areas I might want to buff in the future got a pretty thick coat of clear for exactly that reason.

There is just something special about that "turbo" word on the side of a 60!:D

There sure is! It's understated, yet hints at awesome whining noises to come.

I didn't take any more pictures today, but I moved on from paint to route my fuel lines, fabricate a bracket for the fuel switching valve, mounted the six tank, and started blasting the T-case halves for powder coating.

It great to see things being done with care, exactitude and correctly.
