The beard is looking nice! Mountain man Dan!

Was just going to say the same thing.

Beard looks good on you Dan.

Unfortunately that's the picture of the beard right before I had to shave it off. Stupid work rules.

I agree, I'd probably stick with the beard full time if it was entirely up to me....

"...Stupid work rules"

That sucks, in what century did they make those rules!

It's likely for some piece of required PPE so it seals against your face. STill valid in this century, lol.

The 20th century.

The funny thing about that particular rule is that in the US it's billed as a "safety rule" but everywhere else in the world, operating the same exact equipment beards are quite common (even expected) for the profession.

The argument is that the oxygen mask may need a tight seal against our face. That said, the manufacturer of the oxygen mask has released studies and statements that facial hair has no effect on it's ability to seal (unless it's a SUPER bushy beard). Still, it's a social norm, and thus company policy of no facial hair for us.

Meh.

I get time to play with the 60 this week! Yay!!!!

First thing was fabricating a little bit....

Yep! A Thermo Top C!

And finessing the brackets to hold it right where I want it, and then powder coating them in satin black....

Tomorrow I want to fabricate the new fuel lines.

It always bothered me to have plain fuel lines, so I got serious (and stupid) and bought a Parker 416 beading kit.

But the finished product will be worth it!

So much more Toyota-ey than just clamping hose onto the metal tube. I might have to take the Blue-Jay 42s fuel lines apart just to add beads to them now. :)

I also am doing the last bits of bodywork--hoping to get it in paint this week.

Also, I decided to add a third brake light. Originally I was going to mount it on the upper hatch, but (after drilling the holes :grrr:) I realized it would hit the drop rail, so I mounted it on the body, above the drip rail.

That's it for today!

Looks good Dan!

I should probably do my research before asking this, but I know you probably have the answer... Is the OEM glow screen (or glow plugs) sufficient enough to get a diesel going in the extreme cold (0 degrees Fahrenheit and below) or is the webasto pretty mandatory? Reason I ask is I am heading up to Colorado this winter to do some skiing for pretty much half of December and January. I have a plug in heater but I doubt that will help much while away from home.

Not trying to clog your thread, figured it will be some good tech since you are installing one!

With your 12HT?

Don't sweat it. The glow screen is more than enough.

Our 12HT has the glow system in place, and it works, but it causes issues with our alternator--so it's easier to just not use it. Last winter at -20 or so I was able to start the 60 right up, while my friend's TDI VW wasn't able to start (and he plenty of battery--and cranked forever).

The webasto for me is for two reasons:
  1. Comfort. It's kind of like remote start, but without having to idle the engine. Heats the cabin and the engine, so that when I go outside the truck is warm, and I don't need to do any window scraping.
  2. Ease of starting when its UBER cold. When I go to work I leave the truck in a parking lot for days on end, and I typically find myself getting back to it when it's really late and cold. Last winter my 9 year old battery couldn't start the faux-lux one night, and I even got frostbite on a thumb (not bad, just a little numbness and redness for a few weeks) trying to figure out how to get home that night. I don't want to ever have to worry about that, so the ability to make it warm itself up (both the cabin and the engine) off of a little fuel and the auxiliary battery is pretty great.
If you can plug yours in, do so though. It sure makes everything happier. Our 12HT doesn't even have a block heater in it though, and I don't sweat it.

If you really are worried, carry a can of starting fluid, and disconnect your glow screen--I'm confident it will start easily with that.

Yep the 12ht. That is great to hear, and I am a little more confident about taking it up there now.

It's gotten down the the low 40s here so far and the motor kicks right over, a little smokey but still starts right up.

Sounds like the webasto is for more extreme cases, as well as a luxury in the real cold. These diesels seem to take a while to heat up.

I will remember to get a can of starting fluid for peace of mind!

Thanks for the insight!

Nice work Dan, but have you thought of mounting the webasto with rubbers instead of direct to the body? I always get paranoid about mounting complex parts without some vibration protection from the 1HZ. It makes for more complex mounts but good for longevity IMO. Just a thought, I'm sure thousands have had no trouble without it.

Not hard to toss some grommets in as bushings if needed.

I like that idea. I will get some rubber grommets tomorrow.

Not many pics today. Sanding, sanding and more sanding.

But this morning s made a visit to the jobber....

I am hoping to spray the day after tomorrow, and maybe start on fenders, rear doors, etc tomorrow. We shall see....

I did get this side of the engine cleaned up and repainted. Looks much better.

I did drill and tap the exhaust manifold for the pyro, so one of these days I will take the exhaust manifold in to get ceramic coated.

Sexy bro.

:)

Very sexy.

Just wait until the 6L4 start flying! That's when it will be like sexy times fifteen! When I bought the paint this morning I was driving the 61, and one of the guys in the paint jobber asked why I wanted such an odd color, I told him it was for a diesel 60, and then he started googling.... Good stuff.

Please make sure the glow screen is disconnected if you have to use Ether. Otherwise it could ignite in the intake manifold and that probably won't be fun.
