I think it differs by state. I have USAA, and my '96 would cost $800/year for full coverage with a $300 deductible in MN. They tell me that aftermarket parts are covered up to $5000 beyond the normal value of a stock vehicle.

Oh - and I am waaaay more paranoid about theft than getting into an accident. Not that I live in a bad neighborhood, but tires, bumpers, roof racks, winches.... They are all highly visible exterior mods. They attract good and bad attention.

That's interesting. When I had my AEV Jeep they told me they would not cover any additional mods, and that they would not write a rider for them either...even with receipts. This is why I didn't even bother asking for the cruiser. Maybe I'll call and see what they say...though I'm still not convinced that full coverage is worth the extra cost.

Thanks for the heads up!

Just spoke with Hagerty. They only insure 1989 or older vehicles.

Got a quote from Progressive for a $25k guaranteed value policy. It has to kept in the garage. Problem is, it doesn't fit in my garage. Don't ask don't tell? Or don't risk it?

Hail damage would be hard to explain...... That hail storm was brutal. I was one stall out of being in "covered" parking, which helped, the way it blew in. The car next to me looked like a range target.
That's why I've resisted adding any kind of roof rack, so I can get in the garage. Right now (2", 34s) it has almost two inches of clearance.
I may be a little jaded, but I would expect any kind of a claim involving something older yet valuable to be a hassle without having specialty insurance. Even then possibly.

if you have to make a claim they will look at every possible avenue to discount your claim, that's how these insurance companies work....

It wasn't an "agreed value" policy, but Progressive gave me a very fair price when I totalled my 4Runner. They did account for the value of aftermarket goodies, and I think they did so fairly. Keep in mind, they didn't give me what I spent on aftermarket stuff, only what it would be worth on the open market. Everyone who's been around modifying vehicles knows that the resale value of your aftermarket parts is only a small fraction of what you spent on them.

My policy is not cheap, but I have a pretty ugly record (regular speeding tickets and one "at fault" accident when I rolled the runner)

The rules vary greatly from state to state. And, within any given insurance company, each agent can choose whether. Or not to offer coverage such as collector, stated, or agreed upon policies . My Farmers agent offered collector policies, but my friends Farmers agent only a few miles down the street would NOT offer it. John

I didn't realize individual agents had the ability to offer different coverages.

I guess I have to keep calling around.

I'm more concerned with theft than a collision

Time for a security upgrade ;)

I'm way more concerned about collision and the unforeseen while driving than theft

Due to the age of our rigs, it won't take much damage for an insurance company to consider it a total loss :meh:

It's one thing if I'm at fault (I can live with that and suck it up), but it's the other yahoos on the road and random road hazards that frightens me

Just a few examples:

Refrigerator laying in the middle of a busy highway

Running over a bumper that fell off of a scrap truck, giving me a slow leak on the left rear tire only to have it blow out on me at speed, tearing off my flares and bumper cap

Or just getting shot at by a couple of ghetto thugs

Any combination of these random instances and the insurance company would've easily totaled my rig :bang:

I don't think it is really that some can offer more, rather it is that some agents prefer to offer less than the maximum number of choices. John

For those with Progressive, you can go on the website and quote a policy change. I tried to put 10k in aftermarket coverage. Anything over 5k change my coverage type to a stated value coverage. Stated value at 17k added $80 a month to my insurance.

Time for a security upgrade

I already have the second part of your security system . I do want to get a train horn but can't say it is too high on the list.

I just started with GEICO today but a few weeks back when I got a quote from them and told them it was modified it was no big deal. We went through the modifications and they would cover them but then I said I use it off road and they said they won't cover a vehicle that is driven off road. After that I called a dozen places and explained the same thing and heard the same thing. Pretty much everyone will cover the modifications but if something happens off road then you're SOL.

This time around I told them it wasn't modified which is what I've always done and will just keep on taking the chance.

I have 5K added coverage on mine using Progressive. On a previous Jeep that I totaled Progressive paid out 50% of any aftermarket receipt I turned in addition to the regular value of the vehicle.

I want to bump this old thread.

I have a 1997 collectors edition, and I am having one heckuva time finding insurance for it. I did have an agreed-upon value policy with Safeco, but out of the blue, they decided to drop my policy. Now, I am only insured for the Kelley blue book value of my 80. I paid $15,000 for it about six months ago, and you guys have seen the prices lately—-it’s probably worth even more than that now.

The issue is, is that it is my daily driver. I have no other primary vehicle.

Can anyone point me in the direction of an insurance company that will offer a full agreed-upon value, for a collector car, that will be used as a daily driver, and likely over 3000 miles per year?

I tried Haggerty, but they don’t want to ensure it, as it is my primary vehicle.

I have State Farm and have worked an agreed value policy for two of my vehicles, a 1970 GMC K2500 and a 1959 Studebaker Lark. I also have my 96 LC insured with them and I recently confirmed their listed "stock" value (was $12,500 in 2/2019) and I asked if I had modifications done, would coverage increase, and he stated they would add to the value of the truck if I could produce receipts and proof of being installed (pictures). I realize they would NOT be dollar for dollar on the mods, but it would be better than nothing.

The only caveat here is that I have (8) vehicles insured with them as well as my home.

You may need to get your insured value on the stock truck and then have a rider policy for the add on's separately. They'll want the invoices on the add on's and that rider won't be cheap for the additional scheduled items.

I looked into it a LONG time ago for all the 'off road' add on's like front/rear bumpers, sliders, now a RTT, etc. Was told the price would be prohibitive and I didn't pursue it further. I'm with Mercury here in Commifornia. Some policies will cover the modifications, but mine doesn't, so I'm 'self insured' on all my additions. They'd reimburse to put a stock bumper on.
