Who could build a FJ60 on a FJ80 chassis? is it really worth it at the end?

Not as much as it used to be. Now it's bureaucracy and locked-down regulation. The whole point of everything the BAR has done lately has been to remove slack from the system and force the refs down the path of block/refuse/disallow. My ref couldn't even allow my Spectre air intake kit (with ARB sticker) because I had to shorten the tube a bit to make it fit. He said, if everything else were passable, he would have to take pictures and call it in some central office for a waiver or whatever. He wanted to pass me, but because of the computer checksums not matcing it was completely out of his hands.

My REF said the supplied CATs with my Erod could be altered (rotated to clear frame, O2 sensors moved, shortened/lengthened and approved at his location, But if I go to Sactown or elsewhere the REFs and smog bandits actually have and strictly follow a GM isometric drawing and if it varies at all it is a fail... not sure how true that is, but I now the guy I bought the 60 body from was rejected multiple times for exhaust, not to mention engine choice in Sactown.

Precisely why I will not touch a CA swap, some places in CO as well. They seem to take their lead from CA.

On a side note, if a vehicle is stored in SC for 51% of the year it can be registered in SC even if you do not live here. There must be similar in states on the west coast.

80 frame is significantly more stout frame over a 60.

Doesn’t mean you can’t get 80 axles and suspension on your 60/62.

Pic is stolen from TLCA page. It’s the shop rig for Torfab. Check out the shackle hanger on the front of the frame that is still there. You should give them a shout for more details.

Quite the emotional thread. Your asking so here you go.
I have a 12HT (snorkel, racor 1 micron fuel filter, no more sedimenter, insane diesel oil filter system , 3” exhaust all the way back, new turbo is on its way from Australia, Gunter sound familiar!) on my 87 American FJ 60.
Lots of upgrades. I agree with whoever it was on the diesel swap. I’d go with the FJ 80 diesel turbo. (Future build for me) I would go with coil overs for your 89. Just get a good shop to fab the parts for you. That’s all I’d take from the 80. I’m in 23456, I have a guy here that can do it for you. As far as your California emotions, I meant emissions hahah sorry! Just go diesel.

Get with goreg at CB he will guide you. He is in your state. Pm me for more info if you want. GLWB

There is a company in the UK called design-a-chassis or something like that. They make coil chassis for series land rovers....just a reference point.

I feel like you could modify a stock 60 frame for coils and 80 axles but not having looked in detail I’m not sure if the end product is any easier than a full chassis swap

You mean something like this?

@torfab is coming out with a swap kit

Well that’s cool. But $7000 is too much for me. I’ll live with my 60 on leafs. And one day maybe build a 45 on an 80 base

Could you define "stored"? how would one call it stored to register it there SC?

One would enter into a storage contract with a party in SC. Let's say for conversation the contract is for 8 months of the year. By SC law that entitles the owner of the vehicle to title the vehicle at the address where it is stored. You use your regular address for SC to mail you paperwork, renewals etc regarding the tag. You must insure i in SC as well. Only down side is that you may have to have the vehicle in SC for a VIN check when you initiate the registration.

hmm...interesting. Thanks!

Already did this once on this one: FJ60/80

Going to be swapping the frame this time: FJ60/80 Hybrid 2.0

Hit me up with any questions if you are still considering it. It's a super fun build.

I am finishing up the second 60 on 80 chassis built in my shop with plans for a third. First has a LS3/4l65E package and the second has a 5.3L pull out motor with an NV4500 5 speed. IMHO best all around Land Cruiser out there.

I did the 60/80 swap back in 2016.

Here is our current, a 70-series Troopy on an 80 chassis with a 6.2L v8 and 6spd auto.

Cheers

This definitely on my list of builds to do along with a desiel swap maybe both on the same build who knows fab work is fun for me.

OBD I engine swaps are much easier to pass inspection and receive a BAR sticker in California. OBD II is MUCH more difficult with the current rules.
This means any pre 1995 V8 is a viable swap. Gen I Vortec engines, TBI engines TPI engines and even older Carbureted engines. Seems ass backwards as the newer engines run significantly cleaner even with a sloppy swap.
