Here's a 74 available locally with the only pic of the engine. Can any of you experienced FJ40ers tell what engine it is from the photo? Also, assuming it is the original engine, what was offered in the 74 FJ? Thanks, Ron.

offered in 74 would be the F155 with the oiling system of the 2F... MUD has coined that engine the F.5 of F1.5 'F and a Half'

from just the photo it could be original engine...however...an engine number would be the key to finding out whats in it

The engine appears to be from a 74. The valve cover is F155 72-74. The problem is you can't see if the oil filter is next to the carburator because the air cleaner is in the way. That would be a 72/73. On the F155 in the 74 it's on the other side down low in the front. Hidden behind the radiator and radiator cap. I will say that is a 74 and later heater blower and the hood release on the bib is 74 thru 78. So it's probably not a 73 that was registered late and called a 74.

Not sure if that cruiser is worth 4,995. Nice solid looking cruiser, but a little rough for that price. To me if that 64 you were looking at is still available it would be a much nicer starting point.

still like the 64

Thank you, gentlemen, for the quick responses.
Well, "my wife said no FJ," I'm just weighing all my options. I still really like the 64, but I always seem to end up with the older "original" cars and I respect stock vehicles to the point where I don't want to alter them. I would like the option to be able to cruise down the highway at 70mph to take my FJ on trips. And from all I've read, the 2F engine is more capable. I like the idea of a 4 speed too. I'm still 70% into the 64, but I need to back to it and check out the frame for rust. Aslong as it's as clean as I hope it is I'll probably get it- I guess I'll just have to pick up a newer one also-someday-dream on...

Sounds like a plan! I would probably get a newer rig for the kind of driving you are looking for (just because it is easier to find parts when needed...plus they have added safety features), but that is not to say the '64 couldn't do it...there are quite a few guys on here that really use their old rigs, so know that it can do it if you wanted it to...my 0.02 cents

Cruising comfortably in a 40 at 70 mph, even with a 2F, is asking a lot. The purist in you won't want to hear this... a 350 might be more what you're looking for.

The 74 should have a four speed. You may also need to relax and take your time and settle for 55-60 mph.:hmm:

hate loud V8's

No thanks, unless a car/truck came with a V8 and it's nice and quiet, I'd never advocate putting a 350 in an FJ. Higher speeds, not necessarily higher power or acceleration, can also be achieved through proper gearing. I'm also into classic Volkswagens and if you can get 65-70 mph out of 40 HP and a 4 speed, I would think it should be possible with a torquey six cylinder FJ. I know there are V8 FJ enthusiasts on this site and that's cool-but I guess I really am a "purist".

V8s don't have to be loud... Cruising around town my fan (on high) is louder. I'd still have my F if I could have afforded to keep it.

With stock gearing and 31s, 65 mph is about 3000 rpm. Even with 3.70s you'd likely need a five speed to get the gearing you'd need to make an F happy.

Possible yes. Comfortable? Depends on what you consider comfortable. With 4:11s and 33" tires I can cruise at about 68mph or so. With earplugs it's bearable but not for more than a couple hours. I like wearing gloves too. My '78 has nice soft stock springs and Bilsteins. Any lift will not be so forgiving. Expect 10-12mpg depending on which way the wind is blowing.

We often flat tow with the dually just so we can hear the stereo on the way to the trailhead.

I can travel at 65-70 mph all day long in my 2F powered FJ40 on 35's w/ 4.11's (edit - but like Fast Eddy says, it is loud). The only time it has an issue is pulling a long steep grade; then it is 45 mph in 3rd gear at best. The one in Yreka looks decent as does the one in Lodi.

A practical 70mph

Good info-thanks. I guess I should qualify what I meant by "cruising at 70". I guess my age is showing but I actually do drive conservatively and pretty much obey the speed limits and all. In fact, sometimes my wife asks if I can drive faster. The reason I want a little speed is for defensive driving, for instance: accelerating to get in front of a slower car so that I can let a tailgater pass, or getting up a little speed to pass a slow semi going up a hill, etc.

All Toyota Straight Sixes tell their driver where they are comfortable, the Wise Toyota Driver listens...And they live happily ever after. The end.

4 speed and 3 speed have the same top gear ratio neither have over drive so that will not matter as far as highway speed. I do not think a 2f will run any faster then a 1f. It might handle the high RPM's a little longer, but not good for either. Noise will be mostly related to the tires or wind so 64 or 74 will not make any difference. The 3 speed is not synchronized in first, so that might be something to think about. Never bothered me the f series has enough torque to use just 2nd and 3d and only use first when you have come to a complete stop.

I have owned a several land cruisers and various jeeps, rarely run with a top on. Have had hard and soft tops. Tires is the key to noise. I had a jeep with 35 mickey thompsons and never used on the high way and never had any problems with noise. Moved to FL and had to drive 20 miles down the high way to work. Had to wear ear plugs and shop ear protection to stand it. My cj8 has fairly warn 35 BFG Mud terrains and at 55 MPH noise is not bad at all.

top ratio

Oh, the same top gear of the 3 and 4 speed does mean the same engine RPM at cruise speed.
