A local body shop owned by an old timer is working on it, at a VERY SLOW pace, but they do solid work!
Where do we go from here? To replace my LX or not?

All rust holes are patched up. Time to get cracking on sound insulation and putting it back together.

Had it all buttoned up and went on a short road trip with the kids. My 8 year found out that most of the road noise is coming from driver side rear quarter panel. He even said he can hear the water flowing (it was raining outside). So I pulled the rear quarter panel interior panel and realized that since I have taken the off the factory subwoofer box, the speaker grill is just not letting in all the noise!
So I thought no big deal I can just seal that up but then I noticed water around the interior panel

Showed it to a couple of body shops and everyone is basically recommending replacing the rear quarter panels at this point. Assuming I can even find new quarter panels the labor and other consumables and paint is going to be expensive.
I am starting to look into more creative ideas of taking care of these rusty areas in the rear quarter panels. Here are two that I have had suggested to me, both seems equally awful. Basic idea is to use a wire wheel to take as much rust off as I can and then douse it with Rust Reformer to stop further spread. And then
1) Either cut out some sheet metal and JB Weld it on,
2) Or, seal the open section with FlexSeal tape and fill it with expanding foam.
The offending areas are hidden behind the bumper so they don't have to look pretty.

I vote number 2, plus it can double as sound insulation!
I'd find a local welder to cut as much of that out of there and tack in some fill plates. They wouldn't need to be perfect. Then use a heavy dose of body sealer on the edges and prime and paint with something very durable.
Or cut everything out yourself, buy some sheet metal and a tin snips and make your own patches, prep the area and bring to welder to tack in.

DO you mean a ute? Cut the rear half off and add a flat bed?
A gas capable 120V welder, an angle grinder/discs, an auto dark helmet/gloves, wire/gas, and a trip to metal supermarket wire will get you a long way for $800 or so? Hobart Handler 140 is nice solid welder. I like Lincoln 4C helmets, enerfil 030 wire and 75/25 gas.

I drove the parts truck around the block today, brakes work slightly when you stand on it! There is basically no assist function anymore. The engine runs smooth and trans shifts great (at low speeds anyway). After I parked in my garage, I am now heartbroken on the thought of dismantling it for parts!
I did list it in the classifieds section [Parting Out - 2002 LX470 Gold Ext. Tan Interior] and I know it will live in spirit as part of a lot of other trucks, but I am still being slightly sentimental about it
Of course you are sentimental: It's a Hundy!
(Note to self... Whatever the price for a rust belt LC/LX, it's too high, and thank God I don't have to deal with that s***)
