So I got my faceplate kit today for the radio, did some looking around for places to mount it, and while I liked some, other looked cluttered and some just plain were not gonna happen that I wish I could of made work, in the end I went with a 3m double sided tape mount to the interior fuse panel door... Works perfectly and I didn't have to drill any holes so I'm happy! Now I just need to remote mounting the mic and I'll be good, but for now I have my radio up and running!

So I moved where I had the radio faceplate after hitting it with my knee... I hacked up the mounting bracket that comes with the faceplate kit to make it fit under the ash tray, and above the 120v socket at the base of the center tower. The ash tray still opens (just have to tilt the face down) and its outta the way and more centeral to everything else. I like this much better. At first I was trying to put it on the steering column, but with it telescoping in and out when the vehicle is turned on or off, it would not fit -the telescoping tavel is to great. So i had to find a new location, after some brainstorming I came up with this.

I'll post a pic later, I'm tired from my first week of work -it what happens when you haven't worked for almost an entire year...

Well as some of you have already read, I cooked the transmission in the rig yesterday. I could go on for a long time on some of my thoughts and hypothesis in hindsight but what good is it. I will say that world standard transmissions need serviced, irregardless of what the dealer or Lexus may say... I have noticed some slight slipping/hard engauging in the mornings from reverse to drive... I also had been thinking in the back of my mind that I should have it serviced soon, apparently not soon enough...

Guess I will schedule a service when I get the next oil change. Sorry to hear.

I ordered a replacement unit out of a wrecked rig from lkq. It has 97k mi on it which is 60k less than I have. I will be installing a much larger trans cooler, as well as at least one magnafine I line filter. Here's to hoping I never have to do this again.

Just some perspective on things, I have a 97 4runner that has 300k mi on it on the stock motor and transmission with not a single issue (knock on wood) I run dual coolers on it with dual filters as well. I have only don't one flush in the 100k miles I've owned the truck and the fluid came out looking perfectly clean. Heat is the number one killer of transmissions. Keep the heat down and they will last a long time. Keep them clean and they will last a long time as well. Do both at they should last forever...

Crap...Sorry to hear this...I enjoyed seeing your winter pics...good luck with the transplant surgery and nurse her back to health

in May I am getting my transmission service by a friend when I visit him. Which one and where are going to get the larger cooler and filter? I would like to add them to mine then.

Do you have the sealed transmission on your gx or the one with the dip stick?
I have read that the sealed transmission needs to be serviced at a certain fluid temp and the lexus dealer has said if the transmission fluid has never been changed do not change the fluid, they recomend never to change it if it is the sealed transmission.
I am just trying to figure out if it is a good idea to service it and go through getting it to the correct temp and flushing or just to leave it.
How did you cook the transmission?

yes mine is a 2004 its sealed, 2003 was the only year with a dipstick. so the transmission is different, 2004 has its own transmission from the 2005-09 transmissions as well... and yes it does need to be serviced at a "certain fluid temp"... that temp is anything over 114*f. the lexus dealer that told you that is full of crap, and they are peddling old information probably in hopes of getting work later on down the road. toyota is now saying/recommending on all WS transmission that they should be serviced at 60k mi intervals. they are learning that the WS was a joke and the fluid will not last any longer than previous variants of ATF. i think the whole theory of "oh if you havent done it yet, dont do it..." and its too late now, your better off with the old/original/dirty fluid line of thinking is pure BS and has no proof to uphold it, in fact its been proven wrong over and over again.

to get it to a correct service temp would basically require you to drive the vehicle long enough for it to warm up to normal operating temperature. you can sit in a shop and run the vehicle through each gear pausing at each gear with your foot on the brake and gas to "load" the transmission but that build up heat really fast if your not careful. the machine at the local toyota dealer to me has a heating element in it that preheats the new fluid going into the transmission so you get an accurate reading. thats who i will have fill my new transmission. -i will be trailering my GX to them after i replace the transmission tomorrow and leaving it with them to do the work.

I spoke to a local Toyota dealer and the guy seemed to know what he was talking about, knew about the temp and the sealed transmission, but the cost for the service was only $190. I thought it was usually $300+. I had another Toyota dealer quote me last year and they screwed up and quoted me $180 but then said they couldn't even buy the ws fluid for that....I spoke to my now local toyota dealer about the cost of the ws fluid, they said it was more than standard but the full service and fluids was only $190. I guess we will find out...for that price it easiest for me to have them do it. I am still skeptical though, will find out in a week or so.

Well last Thursday I swapped out transmissions, went pretty smoothly, broke one exhaust stud, and pulled the other out. I went down and bought two new ones with two nuts the same day. I have pictures I need to upload and then I'll post them. But it was a pretty basic swap. No hiccups or glitches. Cleaned out the tranny cooler lines. I'm gonna have the dealer do the fill, and then I'm gonna order a new trans cooler and add at least one in-line filter to the system to prevent this from happening again. I'm thinking of taking the stock cooler and using it for the power steering system...

I did a dealer service on mine last week. Fluid was still clean. Think it was $180.

I have an 03...easier :)
