It is weird, my dealer quoted $190 for my 05 (they know it is a sealed tranny), but I am guessing once I get there this saturday that they will say oh no that is $300.... will see

Just had the transmission done at Toyo Motors in Scottsdale for $170, Lexus & Toyota in Scootsdale said $300

yes mine is a 2004 its sealed, 2003 was the only year with a dipstick. so the transmission is different, 2004 has its own transmission from the 2005-09 transmissions as well... and yes it does need to be serviced at a "certain fluid temp"... that temp is anything over 114*f. the lexus dealer that told you that is full of crap, and they are peddling old information probably in hopes of getting work later on down the road. toyota is now saying/recommending on all WS transmission that they should be serviced at 60k mi intervals. they are learning that the WS was a joke and the fluid will not last any longer than previous variants of ATF. i think the whole theory of "oh if you havent done it yet, dont do it..." and its too late now, your better off with the old/original/dirty fluid line of thinking is pure BS and has no proof to uphold it, in fact its been proven wrong over and over again.

to get it to a correct service temp would basically require you to drive the vehicle long enough for it to warm up to normal operating temperature. you can sit in a shop and run the vehicle through each gear pausing at each gear with your foot on the brake and gas to "load" the transmission but that build up heat really fast if your not careful. the machine at the local toyota dealer to me has a heating element in it that preheats the new fluid going into the transmission so you get an accurate reading. thats who i will have fill my new transmission. -i will be trailering my GX to them after i replace the transmission tomorrow and leaving it with them to do the work.

Where are you seeing the 60k figure published?

Any idea what temps your transmission hit during normal operation? Heat kills fluid more than mileage.

Had the Toyota dealer do the transmission fluid today, $200 on sealed transmission. They said the WS fluid needs to be changed every 100,000 miles.

The Great Him, in what situation did your transmission blow up? Off roading?

I'm going to have my transmission serviced on my 07 4R for the second time at 156k on Monday. For piece of mind if nothing else.

Any more info exigx? It says in the manual change every 100k for sever duty.

Well I've been driving my 4runner around for work these past few weeks and I think I'm gonna keep it that way. I can write off any and all expense I spend on the 4runner that way or the mileage (whichever will be more beneficial to me) anyhow the Lexus will be retired to weekend use and home use.

I picked up 18pts of WS atf and will do the fill Sunday. The Toyota dealer I took it to was a bunch of jerks and tried to charge me an extra 2hrs to inspect the new transmission to make sure I installed it correctly... I have never hear of that and I have worked as a tech and shop foreman for several shops and a dealer... So basically they wanted close to $700 to put atf in my rig, I told them where they could stick 16qts of atf, put my truck on a trailer, towed it home and will do it myself the hard way...

In other news I just bought another ARB twin and installed it in the back of my 4runner as I'll be using that for work and could use the air. Next up is a UHF/VHF radio for the 4runner and a yeti cooler along with a RTT.

Well today I filled the trans... Well sorta. Long story short the shipper/seller only drained the pan, no the tq converter... So I was about 6 or 7 qts in by the time I realized this and it was too late to do a full mainlual drain and fill... So I went through 10 of the 18 qts I bought and called it good. The "old" fluid wasn't bad so I called it a day and test drove it. She drove wonderfully and I was so happy. I will do a full drain and fill in a couple months when I get the bigger trans cooler and external filters installed. But she's back on the road. My wife will be driving it mainly during the week to run errands and pick up the kids ect. I will continue to drive my 4runner for work, as its more suitable for me and my job.

yeti's are overrated... coleman extreme. plus yeti takes up so much space.

I wouldn't trade my Yeti for another cooler, used in Big Bend for 5 days, didn't need any additional ice and if you camp in bear country, yeti's are bear proof, which Colemans are not

I like Yeti in my canoe too. No worries about opening when it shouldn't. Had a few Coleman extreme where the latch did not last long.

So today I made use of a day off and installed a trans cooler and inline filter. I'm glad I got the big one, as there really isn't room one with a fan... This one drops all the way down to the bottom of the AC condenser, so it's nice and big. The box says "full size motorhomes and 5th wheels over 10,000lbs..." OK yeah sure, but it should be good for me with a little off road trailer and bigger tires. And the occasional towing of the 4runner (5800lbs by itself). I'm probably add another filter on the return line at a later date when I have more enthusiasm lol. But for now it's nice to have it back and feel good knowing the trans is protected.

so im gonna be ordering a set of CBI ditch light brackets for the GX, and im debating on what lights to go with... i have narrowed it down to two, either the PIAA driving cubes RF series, or the Baja Designs S2 PROs in a driving or spot. i am torn cause im a huge PIAA fan and have always had good luck with their products but the S2s are so compact i think they would look better and less "in your face"... anyone have experience with either one?

congrats

Even though sometimes I work best in the dark, or so I'm told anyhow... I installed a set of work lights to help with those late night projects/repairs.

I am very pleased with the outcome. There is almost zero shadows when working under the hood now and it's a very clean install. I'll get some pics in the daylight to show you the wiring.

I just hope my quality of work doesn't go down now lol...

Do you have anything to monitor transmission temps? I'm curious how much benefit a larger cooler provides over stock.

Right now I do not. I have been checking it with a infrared thermometer when I get home immediately after pulling into the driveway, and I have been seeing low 120... But that's mainly driving around town, no loss. At some point I plan on getting something to do that
