Whats the life expectancy of the 1FZ-FE (5 Viewers)

At 180k mine was burning a quart of oil every 3k miles, my radiator blew and headgasket... After having the head rebuilt, my oil usage went to 0 and that includes a slight rear main seal leak. Am at 297k miles now and am thinking of resealing the oil cooler and replacing the timing chain and guides and to check/replace the oil pump bearing in the block... Think timing chain stretch might be causing the engine to run retarded more than spec and possibly too much slack for the tensioner and guides to remove. If it blows I will definitely look at a GM V8 or a diesel...

I do have a 1fz rebuilt engine for another truck, pistons, bearings, seals/gaskets along with stuff that breaks or is worn can add up wickedly fast to $5k... Not a cheap engine to rebuild or get parts for, with that said the engine is pretty trouble free and is guaranteed to last longer as it's pretty much overbuilt and similar to a diesel design.
As long as it's maintained properly, it's run forever :)

Hi Guys,

It's been years since I had a gasser and I'm now considering one. If it's getting regular changes, how many k's or miles can you get out these engines.


Any years not prone to the head gasket leak?

Depends on if you are running a Wix/Napa filter on the 1fz...they seem to decrease the lifespan somewhat rapidly :|

Though in all seriousness, if properly maintained, they last a really long time. Replace some of the oil seals/valve stem seals and that typically resolves a lot of the oil leakage and oil burning issues.

I have run wix 51348 filter as specified by wix on all 4 our Toyotas, 97 80 series, 98 Tacoma, 2005 Sequoia, 2007 Tundra.

I have seen a few posts of don't use wix on the 1fz, if this is the case
*What happens with the 1fz and wix?
*Is Toyota filter the only way to go?

I think its more of a higher than normal failure rate of the wix filters that fit the 1fz. I imagine many folks have/current run wix filters with no issues as well. As for which filters to run, you'll get as many opinions as there are brands of filters, but for the cost vs. quality ratio the Toyo filters are hard to beat.

Thanks, appreciate the input as I get to know the new old girl.

I order a few 90915-yzzd3 filters from Toyota I'm told that's the newest part number for the 1fz Fe fzj80.
 
I'm at 201k...I change the oil regularly, fix what breaks and drive all over. Love this engine, but might do a bit more maintenance based on this thread;)
 
Am I crazy with great compression numbers and it running so well to not just rip the engine out rebuild or put in a new Factory Short block?
You can do what you want if the money is just burning a hole in your packet and you go full 'Mud and OCD fix it until it's broke........

Just run it.......

I have 298K Miles on mine. The HG was done at 145K. Runs great, has great power, burns no oil between 7000 mile changes using dino oil. DD at 20K/yr.
 
25 years in a 3rd world country using subpar gas. So in North America with regular maintenance, forever. The 1fz-fe is overbuilt for civilian use.

With all the added weight I'm running, ride height is actually about stock.

And the great part of it was that we were talking about the same things a decade ago. :lol: :idea:

Perfect example for all the new folks who are buying their first 80 series to spend time searching the archives for their answers before creating yet another new thread.

We get to see some historical data over long periods of time, but we also get to see how people have developed and how people’s perception of Land Cruisers have developed in the ensuing years.

And in all honesty, as it’s been said many times before, no one is recreating the wheel here with the 80 series. The newest one is 23 yrs old. Older than most of new 80 owners kids.

We’ve been talking about this sheeeeit for years. :)

I couldn't agree with you more! I searched for my fzj80 for quite some time. Wish there was a form like this when I completely restored and built my 98 Tacoma.

Mud is amazing, I pretty much read mud in my spare time, love it.

I've also been working hard every time I have something new or do something that I don't find on mud to keep adding to posts, paying it forward.

Bought my 93 with 250000 miles drove it home. 8 hour drive. I started rebuilding the engine the second I got it home ever thing was in spec tolerances were spot on. I just wanted to know what I would be driving. Plus this was the cleanest engine I had ever ripped apart "internally" she looked brand new. All I did was New rings and seals and some love to the wiring harness she'll start in -45c doesn't burn a lick of oil. Take care of them address issues and it will run till you die.
 
I read somewhere that the Engine was built to last 500K miles.

When I use to browse old threads for days, I heard that over and over.

Mine has 395k, and still running strong. I put 12 ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil each time I fill up...

Yes, he's running good tires and awesome suspension. Choice is not the issue, first decide what you want to do with the truck then look at getting the equipment to fit your needs.

Agreed.

Mine has gone 316K before a minor headgasket issue caused me to need to change that. But all I did was clean up the head, lap the valves, new stem seals, check all my specs and put it back together. All the lower end is original as well.

I did take care of some other seals (valve cover gasket, oil level seal, front main, oil pump cover seal).

Hoping to see 400K before needing to pull the engine and rebuild, but we will see. Running great for now.
