M1,,5w30, and not picky about the filter. I'm a thousand times more concerned about the cooling system functionality than the oil. Not that MUD is the end-all, be-all, but in seven years of 100 ownership, I don't recall a single oil related issue. (I also don't recall a single useful thing that Blackstone had ever said in terms of real world impact, other than "keep paying us more $"). Cooling system issues will, on the other hand, kill a 2UZFE in pretty short order - as opposed to "slightly elevated levels of strontium 87, try extending your interval to 6,732.45 miles and send us forty-five bucks so we can tell you more crap without context..." I guess my philosophy about oil in the 2UZFE is, "change it, use a filter, and drive the sucker."
Like I said before I think the 2uz-fe is very forgiving. My truck was neglected(probably
why it was so cheap) the PO did very little
maint used conventional oil and drove it.
When I pulled the valve covers off at 155k the underside was loaded with flaky carbon. However all intake and exhaust clearances were spot on.
@re_guderian trouble with your cooling system? How often do you flush?

M1-209 has the same filter media as M1-102 but with a larger capacity and it's about the same price. Both have the same 8-11 psi bypass valve setting. But considering how easy the 2UZ-FE is on oil and wear, it might be overkill unless you want to push your OCIs to >10k miles.

Again, more concerned about functionality of the components than freshness of the fluid. Heater T's, hoses, fan clutch, thermostat, radiator - all will kill the engine much quicker than old fluid. I just had a leaky radiator (top seam) and a fan clutch bracket pulley go out on my '00. I didn't notice the leaky radiator (no puddles) until coolant got low, and Torque app showed temps rising above 225. Now back to a steady 185-190...

Good info. Was the seal size and offset a perfect match?

Yes, I placed the M1-209 over the old M1-102 the PO used and gasket sizes are the same. And the outer diameter clearances are fine. I can fit my average-sized hand around the filter to spin it on through the windage tray hatch.

If you were to go buy a new scan tool (Torque app) today, what would it be?

FYI, Wall Mart has 5qt jugs of M1 for a $22 sale price.
Anyone know if oil has a shelf life, I'm thinking of stocking up?

5w30 synthetic blend, Toyota filter and changed about every 3500-4000 miles.

suprax7nut: Interesting, does the oil sit below the filter on these trucks so that minimal oil drips out? Or do you just move quickly...lol

I never thought about this. I usually stock up for 1 year or even a bit longer when I can find them on sale. Including past vehicle (Avalon and Sequoia), I have over 250K miles using M1 and have had no problem.

I look around and find this:

Request Rejected

“Does Mobil 1™ synthetic motor oil (in an unopened quart) have any sort of shelf life, like conventional motor oil?”

Answer
ExxonMobil recommends a five-year maximum shelf life for engine oils

EDIT - I dunno why it says Request Rejected above, but the link will take you to the correct page.

Castrol syntec 5-30 with kn, Mobil one, or pureone filter.

Oil changed every 10k and filter every 5k.
K&N is also a good filter. The ones I have used have a plastic seal on top like OEM.
Interesting you change your filter at 5k. Some of the diesel machines at my work (75-80,000 dollar units) say filter at 250hrs oil at 500hrs

Good find. I think I'll stock up, even thought I've just changed oil. With Canadians fires synthetics prices may rise. I usually go for the deals with a free M1 filter, but this is the best price I've seen.

Yeah, for some reason the Mobil web page links do that "Reject"

not that I'd ever keep it on my shelf that long, but I have a hard time believing that something that gets the s#!t beat out of it inside your 200°-500° engine, sees contamination, pressure, and heat/cooling cycles for six-nine months needs to be thrown out after five years in a sealed container on your shelf... but hey, Exxon/Mobil guys gotta eat, too, right? What else are they gonna say, "naw, keep it for another 85 million years"?

I remember as a kid on the farm when we needed oil we grabbed it off the shelf brushed the 1/2 inch of dirt off the open bottle with the label either missing or half faded. That is what we had and that is what we used. Never had a problem. Wouldn't do that today though.

Now that the OEM Toyota long filters are not available I'm using long/high capacity M1 filter (M1-209) & Amsoil extended 10w40 usually. Complete swap (oil and filter) @ 15-20k miles or once per year; filter swap with top off every 5k. Been doing it this way since I bought the rig 175k of my own miles ago.

There's a good mobil 1 rebate till the 31st, I suggest googling it. There was a thread here. I bought from Amazon and received my rebate checks.
