What oil and filter do you have and how often do you change (3 Viewers)

I've never needed to top off, even at 6k it's still on the line. I usually change oil and filter ~5k, even if using M1 EP 15K. I notice the idle get's a little rough around 5k, or at least it seem so. But the M1 filter is good for 15K miles, I just have never gone that far. I've considered just drain oil and oil filter and reinstalling used oil filter after first 5k, and would if would if not for my OCD...LOL

Why do you use 10w-40?

note: My 01 OM states 5w-30 -20*f to 100*f and 10w-30 0*f to 100*f. I've consider going to 0w-30 for better mpg with the full synthetic oils.

I have always used mobil 1 5w-30. Duration between changes is something out of control. The last time I changed oil was after 14 months. When I buy a filter myself - I get a WIX 1516 ( 6 dollars) which are supposed to be good. My mechanic sometimes uses a "good filter" whenever I go to the shop without my own filter. I also have apprehensions about the oil type they will use if you do not carry it yourself. The paperwork may say Mobil so and so. But, how do you know what was put in there ? DIY is the only way to put all doubts to rest. Sometimes, I pay 80 and let them do everything

M1 EP was $25 for the 5qt jug at Wally World

Anybody using or know anyone who uses Kendall gt-1 full synthetic 5w-30 with liquid titanium? A friend of mine builds Subaru's and he uses it in the turbo cars. Said M1 doesn't hold up as well. Probably a non issue here (unless maybe your running a TRD supercharger) but maybe suited for a modded 1uz engine.

This is why I try to do as much research (thanks to the many knowledgable people on here)and do the job myself if possible

There's a good mobil 1 rebate till the 31st, I suggest googling it. There was a thread here. I bought from Amazon and received my rebate checks.
Thanks for the heads up, this is a great deal: Request Rejected

I understand the 209 is a bit longer so that would equate to more filtering capacity and a tad more oil capacity. I'm going with the 209 next change.
I've been running M209 with 7.2 qt of Mobil1 at 10k at an average of 12 months intervals since 80k. I'm at 165k now.

There is also a combo deal at Autozone right now: M1 EP + M1 oil filter for $35, plus a custom license plate from Exxon, plus the Exxon $15 rebate for the combo. Limit of 2 per address on oil and filter and 1 on the plate. You can find rebate form on the Mobil site

Mobil 1 is on sale @ Amazon for $22.88 right now. It looks like regular and high mileage at that price.

I was always a fan of Kendall conventional years ago, but I haven't seen it in ages.

I thought mobil 1 was spendy at $5 a qt, gt-1 full is $10!

Thats interesting observation. I trust you that you know your car like noone else so you can feel how the engine idle changes overtime. It would be interesting to send the oil for analyses after ~5K when it starts to idle a bit rough. I will keep an eye out because I do oil change every 6-7 months, ~5-8K miles, but been contemplating to extend it to yearly oil change.

@camino70 Kendall is hard to find around me as it is not in the major stores. Many years ago I knew an engine builder that used Kendall oil in his modified pulling trucks. I remember he said that your just "paying for the name and the NASCAR sponsorship with certain oils".
I had to get 1qt M1 in a gas station one time and it was $9. I'll have to stock up with M1 with this rebate now. Maybe even a frame with IH8MUD on it!

I don't know about you all but my oil is
pretty black after 5k miles seems thinner to the touch as well. Like I said in my original post I think M1 breaks down after 3500 miles of severe service. I don't believe any of these trucks run a severe service at 3500 or even probably 7000 miles.

It may just be my imagination, but I don't often have the radio on so I'm fairly attune to the sounds of my rig. It's like the start of that dreaded "D" vibration. Funny thing is, I order the bottles an filled them with engine, transmission and gear oil just didn't get around to sending them out analysis. Finally decided it didn't make any difference, as I wouldn't be comfortable extending change intervals. Even when I use M1 EP w/M1 filter the most I've gone is ~6k miles.

Man...thats expensive. Why not go conventional and save? I like using M1 EP as i like changing oil twice a year.

Sorry I'm not following you "Man...thats expensive" what's expensive?

I use M1 EP 5w-30, the hand book does ask for 10w-40 in the UK but I have always used 5w-30. I use a OEM filter and change the oil every 5k which is about once a year.

can someone comment on accuracy of the fit calculator on amazon. For example - I checked if the m1-209 filter fitted a 03 LC and the fit calculator said NO.

It doesn't fit in their fitment chart, but it's the right thread and right diameter, only difference is that it's longer.
