I have a FJ60 at my local yard with front disk brakes. I want to grab what I need to do the conversion on my 74 FJ.

I did some searching through the tech articles and the forum, but in a bit of a rush.

What all do I grab.
Thanks in advance,
JOnathan

Take everything from the knuckles out (knuckles, spindles, brake dust shields, wheel bearing hubs, rotors, locking hubs, steering arms, brake calipers, brake hoses) and all hardware, especially all the cone washers for both the steering arms and the locking hubs. Grab the birfields too, if they are in good condition and you are not planning to upgrade to longfields or similar.

Make it easy on yourself:

Take your sawz-all and cut the axle housings off between the spring perch and the knuckle on each side. Don't cut all the way through the axle shafts. You'll have the inner axle shafts as well as all the knuckle stuff you'll need, including Birfs (you can use the short inner from the FJ60 and sell the long inner to someone who needs a spare).

You MUST grab the Birfs whether they're in good shape or not. Can't re-use the ones from the 40.

Like moto says, take the whole axle. Thats what I did when I did my mini swap. worked on it in the shed during the winter. You can take your time tearing it apart and preparing for the new install. Then you can either sell the housing for scrap or post up for someone local to come retrieve it.

yup, buy the entire axle. it'll be faster and often times cheaper than buying parts and pieces. that way you'll be able to take your time to dis-assembloe it once you get it home and parts loss won't be an issue.

unbolt the sway bar and links, unbolt the shocks, remove the front shackles at the spring end, unbolt or cut the breather from the inside of the drivers' frame rail, cut the soft brake line between the diff and frame, remove the u-bolts and roll the axle out. should only take 15-20 minutes.

i like that idea.:hhmm:

some yards wont let you take power saws in so double check. if you can take it and saw the axle out. beats undoing bolts and like said above, take the whole axle break it down at home. that way you wont loose things in the dirt

thats good advice, im sure that not the most appropriate way to go about it anyway..sounded fun though.

i have a complete set of spare 40 axles and just didnt want to bring home more than i really needed.

Consider what else you might want if the price is right.

Power steering? Take everything from the steering wheel to the pitman arm, and don't forget the mounting bracket for the pump.

The rear axle is a simple and easy way to widen the wheel track and improve stability and eliminate rubbing in the wheel wells with wider tyres.

60 series springs are good to increase both wheelbase and articulation - longer rear spring, and both front and rear have the axle centred rather than offset as in the 40

5 speed gearbox?

What's the motor like? spare alternator, starter, etc

Anything you might need - it may be a good opportunity to get some cheap parts!

Actually, that's standard procedure for many of the pros (i.e. junkyards, like TAP) when you want disc conversion parts shipped and don't want the whole axle. Fire up the sawz-all and drag those babies out in under 5 minutes.

I'm reviving this since I will be doing this next week.
1) I have a 73 40 with coarse shafts, will this effect the conversion in any way?
2) Can I just follows Guppies write up?
3) anything different than a mini truck swap?

1) the inner shafts are fine spline in your 73, so you're good there.
2) yup
3) yup

if you need a knuckle rebuild kit, hit me up dan. i keep them in stock at all times along with everything else to rebuild a set of knuckles or perform a disc brake conversion. and i mean everything. :grinpimp:

I am going to make my life a lot easier and since I picked up the axle and it is in great shape, I am going to extend my frame spring mounts and run a 60 axle on my 40. I already use 1.5 spacers so this is perfect. THanks for the ideas and guidance.

You mean widen your spring mounts?

BTW, Ruff stuff has some cool frame stuff for widening frames.

Yeah, widen my spring mounts, just need the rear mounts from RS. They look like regular square stock that is cut and holes drilled into it. Couldn’t I get some ¼ square stock and cut my own? I do have a plasma cutter so that is no problem. All I would need to know is the dimensions. Anyone know :) ?
