I've been putting my old gal back together, the interior panels are all back in and all the crap inside is cleaned out and ready for a good interior clean after the welding is done. Might even have lost my head and threw a bucket or 2 of water over her.

What window visors are those? I can't seem to find the ones that go in the channel anywhere.

Installed new “new” take off alternator from Off Iron

This YouTube is spot on for a changing a 1HZ alternator.

Wow! Looks like your Cruiser was originally sold in Olathe Kansas!

We’re definitely not in Kansas anymore 🤣 tried goo gone, cutting polish, and elbow grease to get that 24 year old adhesive all the way off, with no luck. Hopefully the aerosol 3m remover I have en route will be able to tackle it.

Ugh. Finally got everything reassembled from my steering rack, power steering system replacement and went for a short drive. Aside from the expected alignment issues and check engine light from starting the car with the maf disconnected to bleed the PS lines, I got home to find steam pouring from a broken tee... At least I have new ones on-hand. Now to fish the broken pieces out of the lines.

Guessing aftermarket tees were utilized during my previous timing belt change. Note to self: do it yourself if you want it done right.

Get yourself the OEM hose clamps too

For others thinking about doing the timing belt and water pump (I did about a year ago) how much did you pay for parts at Rock Auto? I ordered through Amazon - all Toyota and Denso parts and it was around $260 as I recall. I’m interested in finding how competitive each se outlets are,
I paid $175 for the genuine Aisin timing belt kit
Aisin radiator fan clutch was $75.79
Aisin fan bracket was $107.79
Aisin thermostat gasket was $2.12
The thermostat I got from Toyota dealer for $30 (same price on Rock Auto)

Installed the Garage Alpha front grille. I ordered it on Tuesday, and wasn't expecting it to get her so fast...luckily I had 30 minutes to spare to install it. The grill installed in under 5 minutes, but it takes a bit of time to put the letters on before installation.

Now I really do like that. Top job!

Wish I could say I was done... I could not get the nut disconnected at the rack on one of the lines (just completely rounded off, was seized with rust), and my rack was leaking anyway so decided to just go ahead and do the rack replacement as well rather than keep fighting that rusted and stripped fitting (can see it still attached on the old rack in the pic below after I finally got the rack out)... only to have exactly the same issue with the steering shaft being seized to the rack at the rack input shaft. Took me a week to get that universal joint off the splined shaft so I could actually get the rack out. Just got the new rack in last night and am still working on reassembly.

So, I guess all I can offer is "use PB blaster to soak every threaded joint and don't be afraid to use heat as necessary". Otherwise, everything related to changing my pump, reservoir, and lines has been really straight-forward.
Ended up in the same boat. No amount of heat, PB, or vice grip products could get that same fitting off of mine either. I even removed the new oil filter for more room. I ended up replacing the soft half of it and calling it good, along with the high pressure line. I didn’t want to open up too much of a cans of worms. I’ll fill and bleed today and hope for no leaks.

Made my first trip to the dealer in the 7 years I’ve owned my LC for an alignment after installing new UCA a few weeks ago.

Also removed the old, cracking and peeling off vent visors on the front doors. Cleaning the old adhesive was a mess and as expected, destroyed the pain under it. Much to my surprise, Rustoleum satin black is just about a perfect match. We’ll see how long it lasts.

The new engine is in and so far all is working great. I have a few squawks to deal with that I told the mechanic not to worry about, so am starting on that "What did you do this week" list today. For those nearing new engine time, or just curious, here's the breakdown.
  • Remanufactured "long block" engine from Powertrain Company in Oklahoma: $4856.63
    • Engine included gasket set, water pump and timing belt.
    • Kudos to Dustin, who was great at helping me with the order. Through several phone calls, I was always able to deal with the same person and he was great!
  • Extended warranty on engine: $299.00
    • This was recommended by the installing shop as reman warrantees often only cover labor up to $50.00/hr.
  • Labor for removal of old engine and installation of the new one: $5593.28
  • Parts for installation: $2061.73
Parts not included with the new engine:
  • Oil Filter
  • Engine Oil
  • Drain Plug Gasket
  • Automatic Transmission Fluid
  • Coolant/Antifreeze
  • Spark Plugs
  • Lower Timing Cover (The old one was damaged)
  • Radiator (Old one was heavily rusted and near failure)
  • Radiator Hoses
  • Radiator Cap
  • Hose Clamps
  • Starter (this was done preventatively as the old one was nearly 20 years old and replacing requires removing the intake plenum)
  • PVC Valve and Grommet
  • Heater Pipe Metal Upgrade
  • Knock Sensor Connector
  • Thermostat
  • Thermostat Gasket
  • Harmonic Damper and Fixing Bold (original was damaged by prior mechanic)
  • Alternator Electrical Connector
  • Ignition Coil #3 Cyliner
I've only begun the break-in process, and am taking it a bit easy, but the engine definately feels stronger. With the old engine having compression on several cylinders at around 60 psi, it comes as no surprise. As everything seats in, it should get even better, but as these early 2UZ engines without VVTi had only 235 hp, it's not going to be anybody's race horse. Perhaps I'll get it dyno'd down the road to see what it gets at the wheels. My plan was not to create a rocket, but to make her a reliable runner for another 26 years, but who knows...

I have a few squawks to deal with in the coming weeks. I didn't feel the need to have the shop address these as I always need something to keep me busy.
  • New Headlamp bulb in left headlamp.
  • Repair broken plastic air box hose fitting.
  • Find out why heated mirrors aren't heating.
  • Fit new LEDs to transmission gear indicators in gauge cluster.
  • Clean up wiring to 2nd battery.

That color looks good. I need to do the same. Mine might need a little more love. I’m honestly embarrassed with how bad the paint looks.
