This is from my NZ new '71. Number is just under the build plate on the firewall.

Well it's nothing to do with your chassis number because that's FJ40-85149

And it's nothing to do with your engine because that's F317815

And I don't think it is a colour code because the only "Toyota 487" I can find is a 1979/80 Brown

... No more ideas ... So I give up Martyn..

your firewall plate is not stamped

That's odd ... More so than why are these extra three numbers here... However ... Being its not stamped could be the reason WHY you have these numbers stamped below your firewall plate ... I think @Ken White has a cruiser around the same year... Surmised it was from SA ... Those were kits originally ... He should check to see if his plate is stamped and riveted same place and if he had the extra numbers stamped

Come to think of it ... That plate should be on the fender... Behind battery area... And was screwed on... This does hold true for USA trucks... Yours is not

Also USA had two plates .... One on fender and one on door pillar for your year

Do you see any holes behind the battery tray... I seem to remember your area didn't have the door pillar... But I could be confusing myself lol

Non USA versions just have a firewall tag.

I did some checking with my vin number and engine number and everything point to it being made in mid June of 1970. But on the ownership papers it says 1971.

I'm trying to get a full report on my vehicle but will see if Toyota can shed any light.
