What does this detail tell me about a 40 series?

That's stock, OEM equipment...

If it works, I wouldn't bother changing it up much, but if you're doing a bone-stock Resto, then it'll have to go. Personally, I think it looks pretty good. Any more pics of your rig?

while people are looking @ this i read someone say this is a popular mod in places where parts are scarce (they were refering specifically to central america) is that the main reason people do it? -b/c they cant get stock turn signals?-
i ask b/c it seems in places like that little details like covering up the stock mounting location would be over looked but everytime i see pictures of this it always looks stock w/the holes in the fenders filled in and painted are other people doing this as a style upgrade??

I think it looks good, as well as harder to tear off while off road!

Ok, so if I understand correctly, that was a modification. No 40 series comes from the factory with sidelamps mounted on the engine tub.
What about those double shocks visible in the picture? What is the main purpose of double shocks? One for low-speed and the other for high-speed compression?

Double shocks are or were for looks. That would be one of the first things I took off if I bought it.
While the 70 turn signals are cool they require you to relocate the hood hold downs. And in this case I'm sure getting those on and off without screwing the paint up is a lot of fun.

My understanding is that aluminum and some aftermarket steel fenders come without the holes for stock signal lamps, this may have been a solution to that problem.
First off where is "here"? Could you have a Bandierante (sp?)? Those directionals are from a 70 series trust me.
Double shocks are useless. My 40 had them on both axels. Leave the one that sits closest to the passenger compartment on the front and remove the most inner ones on the rear.

It's probably just a common mod. Those lamps are farther inboard then the old post-style lamps, and less likely to be torn off by obstacles, and the routing for the wire will be shorter, and less exposed to the elements. However, those are 70-series lamps. I don't know of any Toyota factories in Indonesia, so its likely local cruiserheads have to source stock-looking hardware from whatever they can

I have seen many 70 series in Indonesia. Look harder.
Also, I have said before....the main reason people switch to 70 series turn signals is because cheap ( $10.00) Chinese knockoffs are a more affordable option vs OEM and easier to find. In most third world countries you can buy them at an equivalent of a Autozone here in the states.

What does the directional light lamp mounted flush against the engine bay, rather than on top of the fender, tell me about the model, trim and spec of a 40 series?
It tells ME, that I like how they think!!

I agree with Mauricio. I have seen photos of FJ40's imported into other non-USA countries (Toyota show room floor brochures) with these side mounted lamps. Just one of the many cool things the USA never got!!!
Both of these have hood hold downs that are not correct, the green one is to high, that black rubber bumper should not be on the hood, and the red one is probably a nightmare to use. It is way to close to the fender. I cannot believe this was a factory option. Maybe a dealer mod, but I still say Owner mod. If not for the hood hold down, it would be a cool one.
Can you post pics of these brochures? Are they only for the 84' 40 series, being that the 70 series started in 84'?
Maybe the 1984 fj40 was burning off 1983 inventory, and they ran out of the normal lights at the end and started using these.

I've never seen a 40 with those stock, but I did install them on one of mine...fender was starting to rot at the stock attachment point and the 70 series lamp has a harder time snagging underbrush/branches/etc.
Did have to make a few adjustments to the mounting attachments as the machine screws don't run out perpendicular to the mounting plane, IIRC. Moving the hood latches was just a matter of drilling out some spot welds and then plug welding farther back on the hood. Still haven't got around to cleaning up the old mounting points...
I put the hood latches far enough back to clear the lamp and stay mounted on the "shoulder" plane of the hood, but no so far back that the fender would interfere with latching. Come to think of it, I may have shortened the body on the hood latch as well...I've had a lot to drink since then!
