That's one thing that's always confused me about the 1KZ-TE & 1HD-T engines I've had, the oil filter is on the side facing down at nearly a 45 degree angle, it's gonna get messy no matter how you do it.

Can't speak for the 1HD-T but my 1KZ had something of a funnel built into the filter housing under the filter and a small spout sticking down.. I put a piece of hose on it and any spilled oil from the filter change would run right down along side the oil pan drain. Especially when I'd poke a hole in the filter and let most of the oil drain back to the pan. I do the same thing with my 1FZ and it reduces the amount of oil that can spill from the filter in the first place

Ya, my 1KZ-TE had that as well, even had the hose already there when I bought it. I only mentioned it because of the orientation of the filter.

My 1HD-T had nothing, but I have acquired a OEM tray that mounts under the filter to catch the drips, but alas no hole to drain it down to the pan under the truck. I haven't installed it yet, was waiting on my next oil change interval, but I might take a look and see if I can drill a hole and attach a hose somehow, maybe JB Weld a nipple in place to attach a hose to...

That's what I figured for the LX. Any suggestions on how to approach getting wires in and out of that area? Eventually I want to add lights to upper (lift gate?) and lower (tailgate).

I have not messed with the headliner yet so am not super familiar with that area.
Undo the light loosen the lining at the back. Strap the electrical wire to some binding wire and feed it from the light to the rear. Pull headliner down slightly at the back.
The on the top door there is a thin wire tube feed the wire through the tube into the upper door. If it sticks on the tube get some baby powder or chalk powder on the wires and try again.

Very simple ones you loosen panels.

I cleaned, primed, and painted the rear cross member and hitch.
I also drilled and tapped two little holes to accept screws for this little guy, to hold the trailer wiring plug.

Not "major", but really cleans up the back end of the truck.

On Friday I met up with fellow NYC Mudder @nicolasrapp to pick up his v generously offered rooftop tent. Tent is a bit big for my needs, but I got a chance to chat and admire his truck which is a very happy, well traveled rig. With some very clever mods for international adventure. I think it's seen most continents, including a trip through Iran. Hoping to gather some other NYC Mudders so great stories like his can be shared with more than just me.

What's on his back window that looks like louvers?

I'm guessing bar stock welded to the metal around the window. Prevents thieves from removing anything large if they break the windows.

@LFD2037 those are fairly light-duty steel bars bolted across the blacked out rear window, I think to mostly give off the appearance of impenetrability. Inside is a heavier duty steel casing around the rear storage area that's pad-lockable, and the rear hatch's locking mechanism is disconnected from the power system. A safe within that lockable box. And a pad lock for the hood and outside the rear hatch.

With the background of the truck, hard miles, the faded paint and stickers of exotic places it's actually been it's awesome. My truck was envious

^^^^Nice!

Btw I hope the red grease is moly grease, most red grease I know is just good synthetic grease but no moly.

Indeed. It's RedLine CV2 grease w/ moly. It's on the list of "approved" greases. :) Running it in the knuckle and the wheel bearings.
