A 96 HDJ80 sold on Bring a Trailer this afternoon for $80,500.00. That 100 is chump change.
Assuming no rust and good maintenance this is an amazing deal.

I finally settled with my insurance about my stolen (never found) Collector's Edition....still depressed about losing it. After fighting with them I got almost triple the amount they originally offered. Now the search for a new one...or should I (here comes the blasphemy 😁) get a 100 instead? I've been looking at 2005-2007 ones. There's no rush to this decision either way.
Lessons to be learned:
  • Make sure you check your insurance coverages especially replacement values and comprehensive coverage limits.
  • Don't let them tell you "that's all we can offer"...fight!
  • Put a tracker of some sort on your rig.
Glad it worked out for ya.

I love 100s. After over-building mine, if I got another, I would keep the build mild - 33s, maybe 34s, 2" lift, not too much armor or accessories. You hit the limits of torsion bars pretty quick. Great vehicles otherwise.

That said, I'm surprised to see that the prices for late model 100s aren't too far off from some of the early model 200s...

Posting this up regarding the theft of a really nice 40th Anniversary CE here. I have an Apple Air Tag hidden in my rig to help me find it if it gets stolen. It's very cheap insurance. My wife likes that she can see where I'm at on the road on my to and from the trail, too. It's very easy to find a spot to put it in the back somewhere. YMMV. And I'm very sorry to hear about the theft of that 80, or anyone's. That is really crummy.

I bet it was green, right?
That blows my mind...some people have the money for stuff like that.

Nope. 1A6 Moonglow Pearl.

Cloth interior and a manual transmission.

Well, that is a very rare bluebird, with 87K miles but still... I guess its only money, its meant to be spent right?
Its so nice it would be a shame to drive it. It should be put up there with you at the museum.

Basically exactly what my 95 “Pigpen” was before po’s drove it into the ground. Not sure how rare it is but mine has cruise control and a manual transmission.

Cheers

87k miles is beyond museum. Those are driver miles.

I love my 80 has much as the next guy but I don’t understand what the appeal is to spend $80k.

People spent far more on a McLaren F1. It can’t ever go where this 80 can. Toyota designed the 80 at its finest hour. I think all around it’s the best ever made. And if you have this kind of money then by all means.

I think that's a good idea and one I strongly recommend now. On my next rig I am doing this 100%. Thank you for thoughts.

Lol awful comparison. The f1 was a ground breaking car with unbelievable performance that's still only rivaled by a few cars ever produced. The f1 McLaren is worth millions and really can only purchased if you know someone selling one. Very rarely do they hit the public market.

If you want a vehicle and have **** you money you buy the example that best meets your desires. Cost is irrelevant. Somone spending 80k on an imported 80 series aren't buying as a 2nd or third car. This is car 15 or 20. They assume it'll appreciate or at the very least not depreciate.

When you have wealthy friends with means to collect cars you realize it's a world most don't understand.

These are people who pay others to find the cars they want and have curated collections.
