Spent a long weekend at Fall Crawl in Gore, VA...thanks to Capital Land Cruiser Club for an awesome event! 3 days of killer wheeling and got to see some crazy buggies too. Plus I won a sweet GoPro11 kit by raffle to help document the next outing!

Got to witness a lighter fluid tire re-seat on the trail...popped back on the bead on the first hit and we kept on crawling!

And had to start a tradition of some homemade real MD crab cake sliders for the group...did about 3 dozen this year, next year I'll need more! 🦀

Ahh I miss Maryland crab. Baltimore boy in az now.

I was putting the rebuilt block together and found the crank threads where pretty rusty and the bolt would only catch a few threads before binding up. So cleaned the crap out of it but still needed to chase the threads. So if anybody ever needs to in know the size of that hog it’s a M22x1.5.

If you have Aisins it’s not an issue
It’s amazing the mistakes you can make even after decades of wrenching…my initial install had the retainer washer between the thrust washer and spindle nut. It will lock in place that way but is obviously not correct.

Interestingly, I had clearance for the existing retainer screws by 1/16” or so, but I put in a set of button cap. I could only quickly find a phillips head version so I used those and could get as much torque before those little allen head bolts wanted to strip. Might install a torx set at some point. Anyway back together in proper order.

Only the head of the original bolt extended past the flange mount so you can see the clearance was ok. I’m also a 35 lb/ft preload adherent so that may help a bit. @ajax1 thanks again for catching this you saved me a big headache.

I don't post here much, but have been reading and osmosing great wrenching knowledge over the years since I got my first 97 LC back in 2014.

First time posting on the weekend forum nonetheless, and I wanted thank the 80 community for the invaluable information shared on this forum and on the 80 Series Tech forum.

Last weekend, I followed @93yotasr5 selection and installed this... twice! - One on my 97 LC and the other on my stock 3x locked 96 LX450 (which I impulse bought last year before I retired from the Navy - and yes, the addiction for a stock 80 is real).

I went for an OEM installation look and the mechanical engineer in me thinks it turned out pretty good. I used an "L" bracket I had that in my parts pile from another project and mounted it off the charcoal canister tab, then mounted the oil catch can with its supplied bracket to the L bracket.

The L bracket position and offset clears the throttle cable, and positions the catch can in a good spot near the power steering reservoir but doesn't obstruct the fill cap nor the engine oil dipstick, and is low enough in the engine bay where nothing - catch can or hoses comes in close proximity with the hood.

Been battling a shaking steering wheel under braking for awhile. Most of the time it is minor, but sometimes it gets worse. Already replaced all four calipers as the front passenger side had sticky pistons and pulled hard to one side under braking. Still have a shaking steering wheel some of the time, so moved onto the discs or rotors I've had in the corner for awhile. Was also worried it might be a loosening wheel bearing, so dug in while the weather was still nice and had some time.

One drive flange was RTV'd while the other had an OEM gasket. Found out my lock washers have been abused and re-used many times by prior mechanics. Both of the tangs on the thrust washer were pretty beat up too, and have some noticable gouging I can feel on the faces. Lock nuts have the usual cuts and dings but nothing terrible so going to reuse both sets. Local dealer doesn't have any of this is stock but will have it ready by 8am tomorrow. Should have pre-ordered these just to have on hand but didn't really plan this right.

Haven't done this job in a 20+ years, so help me out:
Should the thrust washer be able to rotate in the spindle threads when torquing the inner lock nut to 43ft lbs?
Should the lock washer be able to rotate when torquing the outer lock nut?

I think the answer is NO to both, so hence ordering all new stuff. The inner tabs on my lock washer and thrust washer hardly engage the channel in the spindle, allowing these to spin/rotate when applying torque. But tomorrow when I got to button all this up, I want to be sure I'm doing it right.

Also wasn't expecting to find Timken bearings. With some discoloration on the inner surface of both. Nothing I can feel with a fingernail, but wondering if this is something to worry about or possible reasons for this.

Spindles seem OK. No wear that I can feel with a fingernail

No to both and you got really lucky. I just replaced my front passenger spindle and hub for this very reason. The lock washer unbent itslef and the nuts wound up at the drive flange. Very not happy.

Curious, the FSM does not show the lock washer as being a “non reusable” item. Only the gaskets and seals are non reusable. Interesting.
Ideally you "could" find a nut position that allowed you to catch a new tab on the washer. I never have, but I think about it every time I pull a hub.

Hadn't done a thing on my truck all summer until this weekend. Did an oil change, so figured I should clean up the level sensor & connector since I had the gasket laying around. We'll see if it fixes the incorrectly intermittent oil light that started happening a few months ago. Front brake pads and hoses later.

Most of this weekend is replacing my dad's tundra front suspension, and girlfriend's 4runner axles.

My son has been chasing this same thing for a year now. Did your clean up and gasket replacement fix the idiot light problem?

Is that the fuel injector clip. 6 of them? Hard to tell from your pic. Year and model of truck helps also!
If it is, the only ones left to buy are gray. For some reason.
