What did I do with my 80 this weekend? Pulled a 4r and taco out of the sand at Pismo Beach. dude went down the steep side of a sand dune and hit the fluff on the bottom.

Picked up my first ever Toyota Land Cruiser 80 Series. Lot's of bling already but lot's of work still ahead...couldn't more thrilled...lol.

Pick up day-7.27.23.jpg

Drove it straight from Castle Rock, CO to Albuquerque, NM and hoping it didn't break down (it didn't). While the lack of power is legendary, it was still pretty depressing getting passed by everyone, including semi-trucks, going up those long mountain highway sections...lol. Lot's of plans (maybe some are unrealistic) to address the power issue. But in the meantime, I need to address a whole slew of more important issues so will start sharing what gets done!

Did a little yard work this morning.

Double line pull.

I stared at how beautiful an 80 is when viewed abstractly, as a concept, as a design solution to a functional, global problem….

Literally perfection. The engineers of the 80 (specifically Takeo Kondo) knew what they were doing. Truly. This design team (1,000+ engineers strong, mostly at Araco) really knocked it out of the park.

What an incredible artifact of a bygone automotive era.

There will never be a vehicle like this ever again by any manufacturer.

We are alone now; we have to create this perfection with what we have available at hand to keep them alive.

That’s it; nothing else. Our own will. That’s what makes the Land Cruiser what it is.

After having done major wrenching on ours in the past two years I've come to understand and appreciate the engineering that's gone into the 80.

In the process of swapping out bushings. Used a tractor, More Power Puller, and Hi Lift during the reinstallation of the driver side upper arm. Aligning the hole of the new busing and mount has been a chore, hence the use of the power puller. I fashioned an alignment tool from one of the old bolts but space to use it for the upper mount was too tight. Maybe it will be useful elsewhere.

She has been sitting for almost three years now. Wrenching on it when I can, put in about 10 hours today, first day I have not worked in 7 weeks, may get a sometime next week as well. Fingers crossed. Making progress though, pic shows status on changing to hydro boost brakes, relocating the winch controller, and second battery add. Not seen is the witsend quarter panel mount.

Made the mistake of thinking that I was going to slow way down almost three years ago. Parked her in the garage about Thanksgiving 2020 and ripped the interior out for sound deadening, carpet, additional insulation, the QPM, Hydro boost, new stereo and amp, Puma compressor, Switchpros controller, dual batteries, new lights including rock lights, backup light where the wind deflector is, ditch lights, rear hatch lights with dimmers, new rubbers for the windows, new hoses and belts, new water pump, delta washer bottle relocate, battery isolator and delta bracket for that, and about a dozen more items I can't think of off the top of my head. Wont do that again, one project at a time from now on.

I miss my baby...

Basically you went down a rabbit hole over the last few years.

Definately interested to hear how the hydro boost works out for you. That is something I have been looking at for awhile.

This weekend I fixed my ignition, worn out tumbler key wouldn’t unlock wheel or turn. So in went a new Toyota cylinder and a used cylinder barrel lock which was interesting to find but thanks to mud for some advice and we are back in service.

My ole Girl finally got a brand new pair of shoes. 305/70/17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers on 17” method mr305s. She’s on a 3 inch dobinsons lift and fully tucked she’s about an inch from rubbing 👌

Man that rain looks so good! Haven't seen rain here in a minute. Thanks for sharing the gorgeous pic!

See...then I see a photo like this and I ask myself, "Do I REALLY want to put a rear swing out on the back and ARB Bull Bar up front?"

Mine is still wholly stock but running on 265's.

Your rig looks great!
Thanks! I like the way stock bumpers look but then again I love the arb look front and rear and also the functionality of them. But not the $$ lol

Ole 80 whooped Union springs to Flagpole Knob, Reddish Knob and Bald Mountain Virginia ✅ Definitely recommend this route to anyone. We drove 4 hours to the beginning of Union springs rd so it’s worth driving some distance for. Awesome campsites everywhere with several decently challenging rock obstacles.(not red mud lol) Luckily I have the whole route mapped on Gaia.

There are tricks to getting these rigs to perform better on hills and mountains. They run very well at high RPMs and can do so for extended lengths of time. I put the power button on and then downshift until the RPMs are very high. I keep the tach out of the red but will climb an entire mountain in second gear if I have to. Try it. It isn't going to make your rig perform like a rig with a modern V8 engine but it is acceptable. By the way, I was laughing my ass off at your comments about getting passed by a semi. Been there and done that many times. You will get used to getting passed when driving an 80 series. They aren't that nimble at high speed so slower is probably better! :)

So true...my DD is an Explorer Sport with the twin turbo ecoboost V6 and my other toy that I sold for my cruiser was a 600 hp Audi...definitely a whole new style of driving these old tanks, but I wouldn't trade it for anything now! I tell my friends that I'd rather roll over at 15mph instead of 150... ;)

To the OP, check and see what gearing you have, maybe an under drive in the transfer case would be the easiest and fairly inexpensive way to get a little more into it before tearing into the diffs to re-gear. My cruiser has 4.56's (one step up from stock that PO did) and is now on 35's....looking to go with the 10% under drive from @cruiseroutfit , aka Cruiser Teq soon.

What size tires and lift are you running?
