Tried it, and the nuts are getting rounded 😟😟
How bad of a plan is to cut the “steam” of the old fan clutch so I can have more space to use other methods of nut extraction?

This might be a dumb question, but are you turning them the right way?

You will want to put all the buckets back in place and install the camshafts loosely with their caps. If you tighten them more than just a couple threads, you will want to follow the cam torque sequence. The machine shop needs valvetrain parts to get the valve adjustment correct after their machine work is done. That does not mean you can just slap everything back together; instead be sure to check the valve adjustment when it is all back together.
Ok awesome much appreciated!! If I take them the block should I leave it together crank and pistons to check? After taking the head of the pistons look smoked to my untrained eye. And one of the cylinder walls looks scored!

But yeah, I was doing the right tight left loose thing, I guess Ill just have to buy some chisel and go to town
You should be able to get 2 box ends on separate nuts. Bind one against the fan clutch while loosening the other. They shouldn't be very tight at all. Doo this all the way around. On the last one you can put box end over a stud and bind it against the clutch.

Finally was able to get back to work on the old girl. At least 6 weeks since the last time I was able to work on it. Thought I would be able to start the hoses on the hydra boost but, the fabing of the other associated work took longer.

Installed the Derale cooler from Witsend on the front and then finished fabing the bracket to hold the isolated winch controller. Installed new loom on some of the badly cracking wiring and relocated the windshield washer valve, igniter and fuel pump relay.

Removed the radiator and all hoses from the area as well so I can start fabing the brake lines to the booster, hopefully next week.

The hole in front of the winch controller was for the return line for the charcoal canister but, I busted the brittle underside of the canister when removing it. So now I will just run the new lines, to the new pontiac canister under the unit. Much cleaner looking that way anyway.

The plus side to the mounting bracket is now I have room for other goodies as well. Not sure how I will use the new real estate yet...

That was the technique I started with, but it was starting to round the nuts. Those nuts are in there good.
 
Got the head of and any thoughts on condition? @ToyotaDon has been giving me some we’ll needed advice!

That's all carbon build up on top of the pistons--pretty normal. The scoring seems pretty deep, you can check if it catches a fingernail. You will want to take off all brackets, studs, timing chain, etc. but leave the crankshaft and pistons in to take to the machine shop. If wanting to check things a little more first, take off some main bearing and rod caps to see if the bearings and journals have any damage.
 
Amazon product ASIN B00OI0VPTIIt was very tight trying squeeze them onto the brackets, but it worked. I didn't have any washers the right size, so I just zip tied it to the holes in the bracket. The shelf actually has a divider in the middle, running length wise. Bout an inch or 2 tall. Kind of annoying, but it is what it is

What brand and what type of wrench box end wrench are you using? 6 point or 12 point?


Lots of people refuse to believe it but not all wrenches are created equal. My suggestion would be to track down a Snap On truck and buy 6 point box end / open end flank drive + wrench, or buy one online. They even make extra long versions that would be great for this particular job.

As an example I bought a cheap $10.00 brake line wrench to use on my 80. Well the cheap brake line wrench from Napa stripped the first brake line nut. I grabbed my regular Snap On wrench and the open end worked on every brake line nut including the one I stripped with the Napa wrench.

There is a reason millions of professional mechanics spend big $$$$ on these wrenches, there really is a night and day difference between cheap wrenches and quality USA made wrenches.
 
Was a rainy long weekend in NE so I finally did something with the pile of new parts in boxes. I got busy! Replaced heater control bulbs, shifter extension, cup holder, AC updates, small odds and ends. Nice to have all dash lights back again.
