Cold weather here in the Midwest.
Had to replace my battery. After I neglected my 80 for 10 days, it showed me I needed to give it some attention with a brake booster, so I did that, thinking it would be happy.
No, it's more like my wife.....
I will continue to not let you forget that you neglected me.
Went to run errands, and it just clicked. I know part of it was that I walked away from it while I was working on the booster, but I didn't realize at the time that the brake lights were on for like 2 hours. It was weak when I finished that, but I figured the drive took care of that, but then it got COLD. Highs of 8°F.
Jump started the truck, ran a couple errands and left it run the entire time. Ended up at the grocery store that I knew I would have to go in, so I couldn't leave it run.
Came back out and it was dead.
I call the wife and listened to her for a bit as I asked to come help me jump start it.
A Good Samaritan stopped and offered me a jump start (I was already prepared for my wife with the hood up and the jumper cables hooked up) I'll admit, I was kinda "fishing" hoping someone would help, and they did!
I got it started, thanked him profusely, then called the wife to let her know she didn't have to come rescue me.
Went to O'Reilly's and they no longer had the 34RPLT (AGM) battery I have been using and they wouldn't have any for 3+ weeks. So, I went for a 24REXT (Lead acid) battery, with a few less CCA, but acceptable.
Drove home, and spent the next two hours in 5°F weather installing the new battery. I've got so many cables and wires around there and they were so stiff, I had to be careful.
I also found a MOUSE NEST under my battery! This is my DD other than that last time of being gone for 10 days. Wow! All the crap that goes on when I'm not around!
So, I fired it up (it even runs better....at least in my head) so I took it for a 40 minute drive.
I still need to tighten my belts again because when I sit at a light with my rear heater, defroster, AC, radio, rear defroster on, it drops to 11.5V at an idle (600 RPM) sitting at the light. It currently has an O'Reilly reman alternator in it and my original one is in a box but needs rebuilt..... Next project!
The problem goes away when I tighten the belts. They have a bit of a squeak to them right now.
