I am in the process of changing out my water pump...was starting to make some nasty noise. Waiting for the part. So while I was in there I was checking the fan and it seemed like it was spinning to easily so I ordered a Aisin blue fan...I got it. Now with both fans at the same temp it seems my old one has the same if not more resistance. Think I should just return the new one? I was thinking it was spinning easily because at the time it was hotter outside. Thoughts?
I'd keep the new fan but do @landtank's Oil and Temp mods. The oil mod is good, the Temp mod is perfection.

The weekend started early.

Beautified the mud flaps, next going to order the valve cover hoses as they're starting to crack and leak a little bit.

Then onto the major problem. I removed the roof rack and spoiler and low and behold 2 wonderful rust spots/holes. The one on the spoiler is starting to crack in slightly, hard to see in the picture. And well you can see the problem with the roof rack rust.
I went to a guy that was recommended to me and he quoted me for cutting out and patching up both rust spots, welding in the rest of the roof rack holes, and repainting the roof for $1100. Is that the going rate? Not sure if that includes him removing the headliner but I don't mind doing it. Roof rack definitely not going back on.

I hate to spend that much but I plan to have her for a long time so I don't want to deal with this crap down the road. I was reading a thread about sanding down/dremeling the rust spots as much as you can, using POR 15, and then try to fill it in with some JB weld or the like...either way headliner probably should come down. Advice would be appreciated.

Not a bad price considering what you are getting. Rust sucks and if you plan to keep it, deal with it now. I am in the process of working out how to get my undercarriage sandblasted. It's not in horrible shape by any means but I don't want surface rust to turn into cancer.

It isn't a terrible price for professional rates. I am a little surprised sometimes how mediocre the rust repairs are from a lot of body shops though, so make sure they are thorough. You can do a good job on your own taking your time and renting a blaster. I'm sure there will be naysayers, but you can blast it clean, grind those pinch nuts out of there, glue in metal patches from the back that are smeared with 3m panel bond (no trapped air), then finish and paint the outside. Keep her clean and waxed and it will last. Still, you might have wished you spent the money when you are done (a lot of work). If you see it as a labor of love, you'll be glad you did it.

I can't believe I'm admitting this in public... a 40 is the epitome of cool. And completely impractical. If I had a really nice 40 I wouldn't want to damage it (as was the case with my 76). If I had a sh!tty 40 that you are always working on it takes the fun out of it (my 77 and 78).

If I ever were to get another one I'd want a patina'd 76-78 40 that was mechanically sound but cosmetically meh so I wouldn't feel bad beating it up. And I'd only drive it in the spring, summer, and fall with the top off, permanently.

And 40 prices are insane. I'd have to "steal" one to be able to justify it.

I agree.:D

My wife and kids stayed at Silver Lake state park. I got away for one day and took 6 people and 2 dogs in the 80 to the sand dunes to buzz around and hit the beach. It's been so dry the dunes were tough going with all of us in the truck, especially up "test hill" (far background of the first pic). Full high range supercharger singing rip to make the top. Lots of people weren't making it up that day. Fun time though and the kids liked it.

@pannymix what make of rack is that? I don't recall having seen one quite like it before.

Hi Mate,
It's one I designed and built myself. If you have Facebook you can see it if you search "combat rack".
Its anodised 5083 grade aluminium plate and all 316 grade stainless steel fastenings.
What do you think of it???
Cheers

Cool but no safety glasses? :flipoff2:

Something I wish I learned at an early age, would of saved me a couple trips to the ER

Actually he put them on without me having to tell him as soon as I started jacking up the rig.

But I do let him run with scissors, and play with fire.... unsupervised. :flipoff2:
