This has been going on for a while, but lots of work this past weekend. Continuing to cut and chop my way around the truck. Started by cutting out the huge empty cavity in the rear quarters.

Big difference in clearance

Than it was time to seal up the openings

Then it got serious. Cut off the frame right in front of the body mounts. With the initial cuts I made for the 4x4 Labs bumper, the frame is probably a good 15" shorter now.
Bolted a 2x6 plank to the body mounts. Will add a small bushing here later to isolate the cab from the steel plank. Essentially this will become a rear bumper with integrated body mounts.

The sides under the rear quarters will have another 2x6 section which I plan on cutting at angle like so. Simple with lots of clearance.

Nice, Id love to go there, great job.Not my 80, but the weekend and a Toyota product that made me miss my 80..
Was on a project in Kathmandu, Nepal working with Kung Fu Buddhist nuns - yes, Kung Fu nuns. They are amazing and were heroic first-responders during the 2015 earthquake. We work with them on many humanitarian projects, this was a visit hosting the local U.S. Embassy folks.
And needless to say since burgundy is their official color my red 80 would finally have some fans ; )
Got to drive a nice diesel, manual Hilux during the visit (note - small nun on the running board was a professional soccer player before joining the monastery and is a total badass):

Little bit of progress, added the hitch receiver and recovery points...
Jose, whats the smallest welder I could get away with to do work like this, I used to weld a lot and want to pick up a small unit, whats the best tig,mig or stick. I love when you update us. LOL

And also attached the bumper to the frame. Here you can see the integrated body mount. Just need to make an additional brace/support for the tow hitch.

I am running a 110v Hobart 140. Great little unit and it's been trouble-free for the past few years. I know some will disagree, but I feel this welder is more than capable for any truck project you may have.
should have been a boilermakerbut at least you're having a go. Learn from the mistakes!
3rd. Same one I have.I second this endorsement

Incredible stars.I went out to Joshua Tree National Park with my wife and kids, and a few other families. We did Old Dale Road, which is moderate in parts and mostly dirt roads. It was a blast.

A couple guys from the club pulled out an old airplane tug used at the marina after it got mired in mud during a recent flood. The cast "white" metal pulley disintegrated and came flying by one of guys.![]()

I've had some fun back and forth convos with @reevesci (aka Trail Tailor) regarding my bumper build. Headed up there this weekend to pick it up, I'm super stoked, and it's certainly custom.
Having one of his tailgate lids I know that TT's build quality and customer service is second to none.
And to keep people guessing as to what's so custom with his bumpers... feel free to guess what's going on here. If you have an idea, TT will make it happen.
Here it is on J's 80 to show the fit. I'll post once we get it installed for the drive back to the Fort this weekend, and again after I get it powder coated.

Could he make the step bigger where a shorty might want to step to get ahold of the rack?
EDIT: It actually looks pretty wide. How much of a normal foot will fit on that?
