Loaded up the rig and traveled up the coast to stay at Pismo Beach. Made a few detours along the way and found a nice lookout off of painted cave road. Pismo beach and Oceano dunes were awesome!

Not knowing what to expect, I had planned to take the cruiser into the dunes. After scoping out the entrance to the dunes, i said screw that and chickened out :moon: I'm sure my rig could have handled the dunes pretty well (a few stock jeeps and trucks out there) but I didn't feel too comfortable going out there and taking the chance at getting stuck so we rented ATV's...probably a good idea since I screwed around on the atv and got stuck multiple times.

Overall, we had a blast riding ATV's and hanging out on the beach. Maybe next time I'll grow a pair:flipoff2:

no need to worry. Reasonable to wonder before trying, but an 80 with street tires will go just about anywhere short of the steepest dunes. And with minimal good sense you have to ask for it to get actually stuck.

Maybe you have too much grease in the slip joint. Take the grease zerk out and compress. Some of the grease will squeeze out. Then put the zerk back in and see if it went away. This worked for me.
I second LS1fj40, I would just unbolt the zerk to see what happens.
Finally got out for bit, after 4 new U-joints and shafts balanced, now I have a weird drive line vibration to chase at 65 and up going to start with more grease in the slip joints and go from there, going to be a long couple of days I think

Your last pictures brings back fond memories of when I first bought my rig!

As others have said a stock 80 will go just about anywhere in the dunes just fine. What gets folks into trouble is not understanding / knowing when to "stop" when they start to dig and get stuck. Common sense will get you out of allot I've found :)

Did you eat up the fan clutch in the oven? I haven't done this mod but my understanding is that you have to "crack" it open, drain out what you can, heat it in the oven so it can drain more and let it sit overnight to get as much out as possible.

From what I read you only heat up the element if you are making an adjustment to the plate that controls the orifices. I worked off of this thread: Blue fan clutch mod even though mine is not blue. It's not even black, just unpainted aluminum.

I took it back out this weekend after replacing the oil and I hit 225F on a steep climb. I can spin it easily by hand even at operating temp. Think I'm just going to order a new fan clutch if they're available and not screw around with overheating.

i wish my morning commute looked a little more like that.
So do I! Too often it's just a few blocks of pavement. But every once in a while it's a little more fun and exciting.

New, modified blue hub fan clutch is available ;)

If you wanted to test the lockers wouldn't it be best to run the ditch on a 45 degree angle?
I leave those judgements to my professional friends.

"Hey Ty, were are the keys?"
"I dunno probably on the floor board"
"Ok, thanks, we'll be right back"
"Ok, test my bleeping lockers while you are out please."
