Correct ^^^^^^^^.
It isn't going to take much to get it right.

Went camping in ruidoso, nm this weekend and proceeded to bust my clutch line in the middle of nowhere.. Revmatching an h55 is not fun at all, but I made it home nonetheless.

I want to retard the timing to correct the pinging under load correct?

Yep. Try and run some 93 octane in it before messing with the timing. You might be able to leave it alone if you don't mind the extra cost.

New starter, new brake pads, new brake lines, and a sweet new sticker.

First family outing since I purchased Buster Brown. We went to get shoes for the kids and sweets for my bride. Son has been reading on MUD and decided the salute was most appropriate. Whew, it runs.......mostly.

Only saw the chocolate malt. Haven’t been to Sonic since my daughter was born 14 years ago. I don’t get out much.

I just got back from a 1500+ mile road trip that took me 19 days!

The first major destination along the way was a two day disc golf tournament at Farragut State Park in northern Idaho. Despite coming down with a nasty head cold, I still placed somewhere in the middle of the pack. Dorothy, on the other hand, took first place for coolest rig in the parking lot:

Next up was a short drive down to my parent's ranch in Stites, Idaho, which is full of mist and turkeys and deer:

After a few days helping the parental units with some projects, I was off to spend two nights in my former hometown of Missoula, Montana. The highway 12 pass from Idaho into Montana wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, although it certainly would be easier with an H55 manual:

Tragedy struck unexpectedly in Missoula when I accidentally backed up into a concrete pillar that I couldn't see. After 20+ years of driving, this stands out as my worst accident to date:

After spending way too much time gambling at the poker table, it was time to join my hunting buddy who drove out from Portland to meet up in Challis, Idaho for our mule deer hunt. Challis is home to multiple landscapes like high desert, mountain ranges, lodgepole pine forests, and quaking aspen creek bottoms:

We setup our base camp at 7600' above sea level, which was about as cold and miserable as you might think:

Despite being abundant with every other kind of big game, the mule deer bucks were very hard to find. I only saw one legal buck over 6 days, which I unfortunately could not get aimed at in time to take a shot. My buddy however managed to get a small one on the final hunt of the last day (pic redacted by his request.)

Tragedy struck a second time when my caliper bolts backed out while I was driving out of the mountains and my brakehose got sheered off at the fitting:

You can read about this misadventure over in my other thread "Stranded in Challis, Idaho -- why you should always check your caliper bolts". The end of the story is that after being delayed 48 hours, I found a local who had an '86 4runner he was using as a parts vehicle that I could use the hose and hardline fittings from.

Here's the face of a guy who is happy to no longer be stranded in Challis, Idaho:

I am grateful the ride back home to Portland was uneventful, although the number of repairs now waiting for me is staggering. Time to take a few days off and then get back to work!

^^^^ Love Missoula. I visited a hs friend who was there for college back in 94/95. Beautiful. Great memories.

Awesome post! Sorry about the repairs required to your rig but this is the stuff that great memories are made of.

Cheers!

That's actually really sharp looking on the seat recover. I'm a 'keep it mostly stock' guy when it comes to the interior...I like that.
Also a big fan of Black n whites too. Nice rig.

How close did they get to matching the OEM gray vinyl on the doors??

It was 98% close to the OEM gray vinyl. I’m very happy with the final result.

Rebuilt the front axles (differential and knuckles puking their lube at each other), installed a new carb and FPR, and mounted some new tires on black FJ40 wagon wheels. Much better than the cracked, 11 year old tires.

All ready for winter now!

black stock rims rule!

Went on a 5-day trip down to central Oregon for my 30th bday. Stayed on Paulina Creek, the John Day River, and the Deschutes. Saw one 60 in the same color as mine up by East Lake boat launch when we got back from snow-hiking our way to the well-hidden hot springs. Lots of good whiskey and beer, good fires, and good food. Very glad I got my traveling companion a sleeping bag that zips up with mine.
