Hi @aer0397 ... how timely. Last week I noticed a faint gas smell inside the car and it made me wonder whether there was a small leak somewhere in the intake hose.

How does this work? Do you simply call the dealer and provide them with your VIN to determine if this work was done previously? If not, then it is just a matter of scheduling at any Toyota dealer?

Your avatar has a 62, is that the vehicle with the gas smell? My understanding is the 62 also had the fuel tank recall BUT the OEM tank is NLA (no longer available). But it can’t hurt making a phone call to some local dealers and asking. Good luck
 
This #HJ61 deserves its own thread but I don’t have that kind of time. But it’s back for some minor nits.

It’s high 20s/low 30s here and there was heavy drafts coming from the doors. On top of that the door locks were a struggle to operate. Finally the fender flares were all falling off due to missing hardware and broken tabs.

Turns out NONE of the doors had any vapor barrier. The shop that brought it into the country is a total joke. I’d be pissed if I was buying this truck from them. Frustrating.

Anyway, cleaned out the inside of the doors and cleaned all of the pivots on the locking mechanisms. They were a mess. They needed cleaning and lubing. All good now.

Seam sealer butyl rope and plastic was used for the vapor barrier.

The fender flares (so jealous) were all either missing hardware or tabs were broken. Not too many options so used strips of aluminum mesh and JB Weld and it’ll never break there again. Found some replacement hardware and it’s hood to go. Fender flares are tight, doors are vapor barrier and locks are butter smooth.

Did you open up the exhaust any?
I had a local exhaust shop, which fabricates custom exhaust systems for many of the lowriders in the Espanola Valley, fabricate a section of pipe from the 3FE exhaust manifolds to the single catalytic converter in my '86 FJ60. From there back it's a stock Toyota muffler/tailpipe section. So it did open it up a bit by eliminating one catalytic converter and the section of pipe that crosses under the frame rail.
 
Got the trunk stripped down and cleaned to the factory metal/paint so I can start my sound deadening.

My vacuum whine has returned more frequently and only happens when the motor is warmed up. Doesn't affect performance at all but it sure is annoying. If I hold the clutch at the engagement point where the car starts to move the noise goes away for some reason. It comes back when I accelerate or let go of the clutch. Got a mechanics stethoscope at the recommendation @MoaByte (?) I think it was. Really cool tool to play with.

Looked up vacuum line diagrams and realized I'm missing one line on the passenger side and one of them was disconnected altogether, just dangling.

Is that a Freespirit RTT? That rack that is bolted to it is cool, any info?
 
Yes and the rack is Front Runner. Definitely don’t recommend the rack. I have to fix it temporarily until a new rack can be made for the high roof.
I meant the rack on top of the RTT, is that an add on accessory? I like how it's bolted to the rails.

Yes, I've got a 1988 FJ62. I just returned from the dealer who showed me that the original owner completed the recall for the gas tank and the seat belt guides in 1992 and 1990, respectively. The gas smell isn't overwhelming, but it is noticeable at times other than after a fill-up. I suspect something back there is leaking ever-so-slightly, so I'll need to hunt it down.

Could be a small crack in the plastic fuel separator or a loose hose connection.

In my case a new OEM fuel cap fixed the raw gas smell. It was worse when I parked uphill, and actually drained out the cap if I had a full tank and a big enough hill.

Another possible cause is the "tube connector" that the tank hoses connect to to pass through the inner quarter to the fuel separator. It tends to rust out, and then fuel starts weeping slowly. That was the source of my fuel smell.

Additional info...this actually became noticeable shortly after I installed a new OEM fuel cap. It made me think it created back pressure that wasn't there before?

OEM cap is vented. I doubt that’s the cause. Is your charcoal canister working?

It wouldn't hurt to much to inspect the vapor separator. If it is cracked, JB weld. It's more likely cracked lines. Your fuel inlet line is likely turned to stone. Refresh the lines with fuel line and use your air compressor to find and blockages. Your oem charcoal canister is also likely defective. Most of us have either remedied it or are about to.
The worst thing that happened to me doing this was that all the screws snapped off removing the access plate. I still haven't fixed that or the skid plate for the same reason.

I bought a cheapass metric "Tap & I'll kill you" set on Amazon.

My dad was quite possessive of his guns and tools. When I found the case labeled "Tap& Die", I knew I had better leave it alone 😁.
I knew that if it wasn’t a hammer or a drill I better leave it the hell alone!
