Nothing too exciting the past few days. Ordered some SCS wheels (Gen5’s in gunmetal) that should be here tomorrow and going to try out some exterior Bison Molle panels (not 100% sold on the concept).

I did finally do the windshield washer reservoir relocation mod. That was the last thing I was rubbing on.

Rolling sensing curtain airbag off switch. You push the button for a couple seconds and it turns off your side airbags. Use this for low speed off road use. It stops the airbags from going off at sharp angles and or bad situations. Nice to have. Wish my 03 had it.
Your 03 doesn't have RSCA at all. No roll sensing on the side bags whatsoever.

Productive day!

Installed:
  • GX Basecamp’s accessory panel mount
  • Midland MTX-275 GMRS radio
  • Auxbeam switch panel
Wired up the fusebox the other weekend, but didn’t have time to finish up the install.

Finished product

Re-purposed my secret compartment mod to house the radio unit and handheld when not in use.

Rebuilt both lower control arms with new bushings and ball joints. Also replaced the sway bar links. The front steering feel improved dramatically. Watching those bushing come popping out when they release was exciting. I have the hardware to do the uppers also, but ran out of time.

I spent the day changing spark plugs.

In reality, I started the day changing the water pump and timing belt and every single step along the way fought me. By the time I couldn’t get the AC compressor off, my wife called the dealer and set up an appointment. With the revenue generated from the swear jar I filled this morning, it should more than cover the dealer cost. I hope I have enough money left over for my therapist.

New spark plugs though.

Followed this awesome write up on replacing the transmission fluid:
GX470 Trans Fluid Drain & Fill Tips/Write-up - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/gx470-trans-fluid-drain-fill-tips-write-up.1263824/

Straight forward and definitely overdue. I had done a drain and fill about 40k miles ago, but this process got all of my fluid looking new. The pic shows the old dirty fluid that I drained out of the pan vs the fluid that came out of the overflow plug when I checked the level.

Continuing with the boring wrenching/maintenance:

  • I developed a sudden transfer case leak out of the front output seal. Easy job if you are able to get the flange nut off the output shaft. A thin and long flathead screwdriver was key in popping the dent that locks the nut out.

  • I figured it was a good time to change the diff fluid all around as well. The bags of gear oil are WAY more convenient than the old bottles + pump.

  • My OEM CV axle boots were finally starting to rip so I took the opportunity to upgrade to some nice CVJ remans.

  • While I had the passenger side in the air for the CV axle swap, I noticed a bunch of play when I shook the tire and 12 and 6. I found the wheel seal that presses into the inside of the knuckle was ripped in a few spots. Water/mud/grime got in there and killed the bearing. Replaced the seal and hub, so hopefully it should be good for a while now.

Which CVJ axle did you end up going with? The "BEST" or "GREAT" option?

I went with the "best" option.

Spent some time getting off the pavement and away from the city...
