I'd be interested in hearing opinions on which winch the majority of you are using for an ARB bumper and why.
I hear the 8274 is a real work horse (wire rope only) and the 9.5xp has a quicker line speed and is sealed better (optional synthetic rope)

Thanks again!

Buy a used 8274 off Craigslist, rebuild it (fairly easy, find a video or something), add synthetic line, new coat of paint. I saved you a grand.

8274: Manliest of winches; makes girls swoon, dogs and children follow your truck down the street, and everyone else admire your manly rig. A hell of a winch besides - easy to hot-rod, easy to re-build. Bulletproof spur gear operation. Blazing line speed.

9.5XP: ok winch for girls that can't fit an 8274 in their bumper. :D

You can put synthetic line on an 8274; I have it on mine:

Good luck with your decision in any event.

I have an 8274 stuffed in an old style ARB on my 62. I recently went through it. The motor was pretty crusty inside (salty winter roads, a few submersions while wheeling) but the gearcase was spotless with no hint of moisture. If I ever have need for another winch, it'll be another 8274.

I have a Warn M8000 in my Tacoma ARB and a soon to be installed Warn VR10000 in my ARB on the 60. Have always admired the 8275 and hear it is the best, but pricy.

Really good winch, but the are very pricey. Amazon is listing them at $1799!!

Yikes! I paid just under $500 for the VR. Will report back on how effective it is once I get around to installing it...my M8000 with synthetic line has been outstanding.

Manitoba eh? From Winnipeg myself. Those are severe conditions to endure and a strong endorsement. Thanks for the feed back. Sounds like 8274 is the way to go. Plus I want girls to swoon, dogs and children to follow my truck down the street, and have everyone else admire my manly rig:D

8274...without ever looking back, ... best winch ever made in my opinion and they fit a ARB bumper very well, and just look like they belong on a cruiser, used ones are usually available for $500 or so...they are easily rebuildable as well

8000lb winch is maybe a bit under spec for an fj60... Depending on the weight of the truck and the specific winching situation... A stock truck on pavement vs a built 60 with bumpers, sliders, roof rack etc etc going up a muddy hill...

Good point. A FJ60 all Gucci'ed out in 3' of snow , uphill may be a challenge??? Hope not, more than likely going to pull the pin on a 8274 and put on a synthetic line and research pulling the solenoid and replacing it with SS. Neither upgrades are available as options for some reason

I have a Warn x8000i on the crawler and it does the job, have stalled it only once on an incredibly hard pull (had two trucks tied together that I was hooked to trying to get my heavy rig unstuck, I was wedged in some large rocks and had to be forcefully drug across them up hill). added a snatch block and we were good. But also have a Warn 8274 I got from my brother in law for... FREE! Thinking about adding it to the crawler if it will fit where my other is, if not I will put it on my other 60 where it will live an easy life. The only issue I have had with the x8000i is the solenoids for the "in" function needed replaced.

I think you will find that both winches will serve your purposes pretty well.

I like the 8274. One of the things I like is the 150' line capacity. It really can be handy if anchor points are far between or you use a snatch block.

Anybody got a decent looking pic of a 60/62 with a 8274 mounted?

Here's one with a 8274 and new style ARB bumper. Hope it helps.

Good luck.

XD9000i on my heavy 60. It has pulled the 60 through headlight deep snow with the line doubled with a pulley. Barely ran but it pulled. If I had dug just a bit it (like a quick few minutes with a shovel) would have worked much better. I can remember that the front end (frame, bumper, suspension) was stressed a lot... so if you ever get a 12k winch stalled on a double pull watch out.

Normal pull for me is through bumper deep snow single pull. seems to work OK even when it is hundreds of feet over drifts involving multiple sets of pulls. The rig doesn't seem to sink too much past that even on bottomless snow.. the headlight deep incident was a yard dart move in some super deep snow.

I have an 8274 for the 40 which needs a rebuild and I haven't used yet... if it pulls anything like the winch on the 60 it'll be super sweet. especially with the 150' line capacity. that's what i often wish for on the 60... usually a few straps added together work well. I am excited to have the 8274 setup with 150' of synthetic...it'll be money.
