Hi, I want to get a little more power out of my 1984 fj60's 2f engine. Could you guys list some parts that might help get a little more Hp/torque. Also, can you get cold air intake for a 2f engine?
Thanks:)

Use the search function (upper right hand corner when in the main 60s forum window). This has been discussed extensively.

The short of it is there are no magic potions. The engine is built for durability, not performance. Add-ons are pretty limited (header, exhaust, a couple different cams) but none are going to make it anything but a tractor engine. That's not to say you don't have options, just don't expect a whole lot.

It seems the only way to get any real performance is a total rebuild (increase the compression, new cam). There is a thread where somebody got like 300HP out of his 2F.

There are some 2F engine builders that have great info.

You can make a cold air intake like I am going to do, but I don't think I'll see more than 1-2 hp.

A cam will help (search for camshaft)

A good carb rebuild will help or an EFI set up.

Welcome to mud also

You CAN get a little more power out of a 2F. Putting a header on a stocker doesn't do it. You have to do EVERYTHING all at once...balance, bore, headwork, intake work, cam of course, ignition, carb work....then you can get a LITTLE more power out of the 2F. You can build an engine that'll tach 5 grand (I did), but it'll still be a dog on the long hills.

Alright ive been reading around and it seems its better to leave the 2f alone and if you want more power just get a vortec 5.7 l.
If you were to get a new vortec engine what else would you have to get and what would it cost you at the end? Dont know much sorry if it's a bad question.
Thanks

My advice is to stay where you are. The 2f is a great motor for what it is. My 1st LC was a 40. I put a slightly built 350 in it. My Dad decided to out do me with his 40, 400 ci, 30 over, cam, racing pistons, rollers, holley 650 etc. the only thing its good for is pulling up to those little loud muffler cars and blowing exaust through their windows. Now I have 2 40's sitting in my barn I rarely even drive. I will never do anything more in any of my LCs other than stock 2f's. One of these days I'll get those motors out and replace back to stock. The 2f is real nice on trails, easy to use, add any more horse power and its too difficult to drive.

Thanks for the help guys. One more thing though would adding new performance camshafts wear out my engine faster?

No, a camshaft will allow more air/fuel in and more exhaust out. I just put one in my wagon, I like it a lot. It was a lot of work though. I'm anxious to see what kind of mileage I get with it.

Upgrades for 2F

I added the Man-A-Fre power pack kit. This consists of a Weber 38DGAS carb, tuned header and DUI ignition. I did see an increase in power but the miliage went from 10mpg to 6. Some tuning with the jets had brought me up to 8-9 mpg. I see an 10 mph increase in speeds going up hills on the interstate. Remember more power = less mileage. When it comes to rebuild time I think I will look at a cam. Hope this helps. BTW I am running 33" tires with 4:11's.

I picked this up a while ago. I am hoping to pick up a spare head for my 3FE and put it into practice. If you can cut back on intake charge and exhaust flow restrictions, you should be able to boost output without cutting economy (other than hitting the skinny pedal harder). Don't know how much gain can come from "porting" alone, but I like tinkering....

I had drastic improvements with a Weber and a header. My 60 with all the stock plumbing was impossibly gutless and almost invisible under a sea of tubing and gadgets that no longer did thier job. I had mixed results with different cams, I ended up with a stock cam, a well-tuned Weber with a good air cleaner and a cheap-o man a fre 6 into 1 header with a 2.25" pipe. Lastly I took the plunge and put in a 350 and wondered why I ever spent any time trying to improve the 2F.

Geez.

Their is a 2F in here somewhere :D

Jeebus!~
Does the FAA have to inspect that thing befor take off?

I was thinking:

MAF RV cam
Schumann mid-stiff valve springs
DUI dizzy
(or JimC dizzy and carb retune)
Clutch fan delete to electric
2piece ceramic header
cat delete
new speedpro piston rings
Main and cam bearings
desmog

That would do it
