Check out fordtechmakuloko on YT for anything EB related. He's what CCN is to toyota, but for FoRd.
I've gotten very familiar with his voice over the last few days. A few missing/misordered steps in his timing chain series, but grateful for the free resource. Buttoned her up this morning.

Parts total came to $1275 with shipping, combo of OEM Parts Direct and RockAuto and hopeful to never do one of these jobs again.

Boutta do the reasonable thing and take one running and driving 40 and make it not that

@40LandCruising Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. I’ll bite, whatcha doing with it?

Well the plan is to take the green 73, that we've gone through pretty thoroughly at this point. And swap the red '70 body on to it. Just because the green one has kustom sheet metal from the door back. And my dad doesn't like how it looks.

But now he's second guessing it all so we have to discuss over biscuits if we are doing it or not.

Updates: my dad had a come to Jesus moment and decided he'd never finish the project so we've abandoned it and are just gonna take this time we had slotted for the body swap and do an axle swap and twin stick install instead.

So, we have a 1970 FJ40 with title for sale

The powder coating on my 4x4 Labs rear bumper is flaking off pretty badly. Can anybody recommend a shop that can sand or sandblast the old coating, remove the rust, and then put on a fresh powder coat?

Question:

Any of y'all have experience twisting the splines on a 9.5 locker and not being able to get the shaft out? I've heard people talk about it, and have heard of trimming the shaft to avoid it, but just looking to see if anyone has experience with it happening.

My buddies and I have a trip to Moab planned for next September and I'm tentatively planning to take my 80 since the 40 needs an absolute boat load of work to make it worth hauling across the country and I'm in the middle of house shopping and moving states and have vehicles everywhere. I have e locker axles I plan to swap under the 80 and I plan to go through them before install. And was considering trimming the shaft.

Trimming the elocker shaft is not the solution to that problem. Machining the splines out of the middle of the shaft is. Like this.

If the long spline twists while locked, you're screwed. Gotta cut the housing apart to get to the shaft, to cut that apart, so you can get it out.

Johnny is correct as usual. I think this is a good mod to do, especially for a place like Moab with lots of traction. I did this mod to my 80 prior to a Moab trip a couple of years ago, and I highly recommend it. Just to be clear, this mod is for the rear passenger side axle shaft.

Sell the rear elocked axle and get a TJM, ARB etc for your current axle. Bypass the twisting splines all together.

Some more info on the subject of turning down the axle splines:

Thank you for the clarification!

I don't plan to wheel the 80 that hard going forward, that's what my 40 and mini truck are for, I just like the convenience of stuffing the whole e locker axle in for something that doesn't get beat too hard. But I have heard this from a lot of people, about the downfalls of the factory 9.5 e locker

You dont really have much to worry about then, if you arent going to wheel it hard with huge tires. But since you have the axle loose and want to stay with the oem elocker then it may he worth following landtanks guide for piece of mind.

First time turning wrenches on this HDJ81, adding a ARB/OME 3" lift. Rear is done, working on the front tonight.

Anyone in the Triad area that could help press out/in my bushings? I have the slee tool just no press...yet.

Had to turn wrenches to change blades on the saw. That counts, right?
