Will be at my sons’ swim meet all morning but did get the round headlight bezels cleaned up and painted. One was pretty beat up since it came off the wheeling rig but I was able to bend it back straight enough to work properly. I wanted to start sanding the high build primer last night but...

Side by side comparison of Rein (PSH0328) (I bought mine from RockAuto, $40-ish - suprisingly good experience) and Vintage TEQ ($80-ish) high pressure power steering hose assemblies, for the 80 series.

The Rein is a factory production part, the Vintage TEQ is hand made to order. Both are good quality (I don't favor the "inside use only" split loom on the VT hose assy, but we'll see how it stands up to engine bay temps over time). Photos are "as delivered".

I think Rein may be the Toyota OEM. I can't tell the difference between it and the OEM hose on the truck.

They are both supplied with crush washers.

Starter bench test:

I've completed the cleaning and solenoid rebuild on Charlie's '95. The starter passes all the tests, except the full load operation test (I didn't connect the ammeter). I can get the solenoid to operate perfectly, and the motor spins, but I can't get it to spin when the solenoid pushes the gear out. What am I doing wrong?

I remember having this problem when I bench tested my 80 series 2.0-kW starter years ago, but I don't remember what the problem was, or how I solved it. I'm pretty sure everything is fine, but I'd like to know that before I bolt it back in.

Parked my 80 in the garage last night and noticed a small puddle of reddish fluid this morning. The steering cooler is rusted pretty badly and it appears to be coming from that. Reservoir is low and I had also noticed a slight whine lately while driving. So, my question is what are TWT's recommendations for replacing the paperclip? Should I go with the kit from wits or something else? Thanks.

(1) ditch it, and splice the hoses together
(2) buy Joey's
(3) buy OEM (same part fits 1993-1997)

(4) make one from steel tubing (you'll have to anneal it to make it soft enough to bend without kinks) and spend the money you saved on beer

Thanks for the reply. Too bad OEM is so expensive. Is bypass really an option here in NC? I've read some conflicting posts about bypassing and proper operation, even w/o heat considerations. Does anyone have experience with using a small generic fin cooler?

Buy any other aftermarket PS cooler With appropriate length and install in place of paperclip. Derale makes a popular one. Was the go to before wits end was around. Think it’s actually the one he includes in his kit.

Got mine off summit years ago. Went with the condenser style versus finned aluminum but has been problem free. I used the old brackets and reshaped them to fit the new unit.

Just get some gates green stripe in 3/8" and its good to go

EDIT: the difference between his and theirs is he has his anodized.

Correct. Joey buys his coolers from Derale.

Some PO put a generic aluminum fin cooler on mine. It wasn’t leaking, so I haven’t messed with it. I towed a 2K lbs trailer up and down mountain passes out west this past summer for a month and never had an issue with trans temps.

How timely... met the family for dinner tonight and saw the 80 had a little smoke coming from the passenger fender. Thought it was a coolant leak at first but nursed it home and it's a red fluid. It was too hot to get to much into it tonight but I suspect the PS cooler. Leak appears to be coming from the lower radiator hose area but it was just too hot to poke around and see for sure... more thorough investigation tomorrow. Until then, I'll research the options listed above.

excluding the paperclip, all of the power steering stuff is on the drivers side.

Unless the paperclip split on the top on the passenger side?
