Likely you have uneven deposits on the rotors. I fix those with re-bedding the brake pads and the system scrapes away those high areas. Typically repeated (5-6) hard stops from 60-20 or so followed by a longer cooling drive.

" Despite the popular myth, brake judder is not caused by warped rotors. Judder is the result of a thickness variation in pad buildup on the rotors' surfaces. "
Thank you. I actually did 4 from like 45. I need to get the car back and do more.

IS this the dubai parts place?

Thanks for sharing, very interesting read. Based on this, I don't think that I have ever experienced 'brake judder' yet. I will be on the look out going forward.

I learned the hard way, when racing for BMW, every race weekend meant Monday morning rotor resurfacing, brakes would pulse like crazy after the track. Since we were using StopTech fronts from Zeckhausen, reached out to them and they suggested next time, just go out on the back paddock and do half dozen hard stops. Problem solved, it was just deposits from the Pagid pads.

I think the brakes on the 100/470 are maybe a bit undersized. I periodically get a pulsation just from normal driving around town/commuting even though I’m currently running EBC greens. I think the smallish rotors get pretty hot stopping such a heavy vehicle. A little time at a red light holding the brakes and you get some transfer resulting in pulsation and a need to reseat. I now try to keep the brake pressure as light as possible at any prolonged stop and occasionally just set the Han brake if I’ve just come steaming down an off ramp and had to scrub off a lot of speed.

If it is heavy enough, yeah. You want to build that heat and scrape off the high deposits. Heavy truck multiple stops from 45 might to do it. Trick is to brake hard, then start up again immediately to keep up the heat.

@izzyandsue i was doing that completely wrong. Hard stop from 45 and come home. I will report back this afternoon. Thank you again.

Try to find kind of an empty straight road, dont need much distance. And watch out for anyone behind you of course. Maybe do 6 iterations, 0-45, hard stop to 5-10, accelerate back to 45 and hard brake to 5-10, etc. All in a row, then a cool down. For me, there is a 2 lane that is usually empty between 2 exits off I-485. I do my hard stops, clean the disks, then jump on 485 for a couple miles and job done.

Found this Thule storage cheap on Craigslist and mounted it to the 80 this morning. This will be perfect for winter coats, sleeping bags and extra clothes

Anyone in Charlotte have a sheetmetal brake that'll handle 20ga sheet? I'm in need of a side shelf for my rolling cart and can't see paying more for it that the two toolboxes it's going to serve, so I'm going to make one. Or two. Or three, if that's what the brake use costs me ;)

If you can't find anyone, you could get the job done with some clamps and some decently thick angle iron.

My won’t bend that thick. It struggles with 24.

Sparkle in a cavern of filth...

Decided after 7(?) yrs of fj60 ownership I should attempt again to limit the driveway tattoos. Got a new valve cover gasket from Mr T via Scott Clark. It’s amazing how flexible the new one is compared to the old one that is brittle and plastic-y.

opted to take advantage of having the valve cover off and hit it with some barkeepers white powder abrasive soap and an abrasive sponge... that worked great until the sponge was covered in black oil and stopped working... so applied a generous coat of degreaser and then came back with a new sponge and finished the job...

I love the sparkle now under the hood, sad I have to cover it with black spagetti and an air filter.

tbd of my driveway will be as pretty as my valve cover... I also have a couple cork gaskets to use at a later date... I’m sure it’s just the dreaded rear main seal but wanted to attempt the easier things first.

it got too dark before I could get a decent picture of it all buttoned up...

Started the list on Heather's truck. Replaced the under sized, weak batteries. Mad new and replaced power and ground primary and secondary cables, body and frame grounds. Located the source of the trans fluid leak, the starter power cable rubbed a hole in one of the transmission cooler lines.

well there’s your problem right there

Yeah, a diesel in my stable, weird huh? I've always said that I am good with a diesel that works for a living. So now we have two, in the towing rig and in the tractor :)

Non preventative maint

Bearing siezed. Composite pulley melted. Shredded the new SC belt. Took out the ac belt and twisted up the alt belts but somehow left all the other important pieces alone.

Lil help from Sam and I had the pulley numbers and found a belt number to get back In action. Except someone swapped belts in the sleeve at the parts store. This one is way too long an diff part number on belt vs sleeve :/

Mostly done with my knuckle job. Didn’t realize the snap rings don’t come with the knuckle kit so I have a few on the way that I’ll swap with the ones I reused. Also one of the u-joints on the front driveshaft feels lousy so I have a set coming to rebuild it before I reinstall it. View attachment 2530786

No photos but I got the snap rings installed and the u-joints swapped out and drive shaft installed thanks to Eric aka fourtrax.

I asked him for shop recommendations that could swap out my u-joints and he told me to just to bring them to his shop and we could do it. Thanks again Eric!
