TTT -- The Tool Thread

I don't do nearly as much work as most of you, nor the depth and no fab work, but for the work I do I have a few go-to tools:

• Flex-head ratcheting wrenches. Why I did not buy them 20 years ago is a mystery. They've made so many routine jobs even easier.
• Smith Little Torch (oxy-acetylene setup) for brazing. When you need precise, pin-point heat, it's the shizz. I bought this for RC crawler addiction but am finding it extremely useful around the house and for some tasks on the GX.
• Silky Gomboy saw. Makes me want to prune trees, anyone's trees, all of the time - it's that beautiful a tool!

I sold most of my power tools except for a drill, and prefer to use hand tools for everything: since I am rarely in a rush, I will spend the time to figure out how to do every task with only hand tools. The extent of my tool collection, which would be sufficient for doing much of the general repair/maintenance work on a Toyota 4x4, will fit in the original ONSC tool bag.

Measuring runout on the spindle, below the chuck. .005" of runout measured on the bit. Not bad at all!

Johnny could you post a shot of that motor's builders plate? The word "Dayton" on it was in a particularly nice typeface. I'd love to have it for badge hunting.

The drill's builders plate and ID is quite nice too. I love older builders plates like this. It's sort of a lost art.

In reading about this drill press, I'm finding out all sorts of neat info. For example, the auto-retract function of the quill is non-functioning, so I've been reading up on the "late model" 17-600 drill presses. Mine doesn't have a return spring on the quill, but this weird thing on the side in it's place that I've never seen before.

Turns out it's a depth stop, but the gauge is missing! Turns out the return spring is inside. Talk about awesome. Garage journal is amazing:

Most usful tool in the shop is the Hitachi cordless impacts and drills. Use them on almost every job.

@jfz80 and I laughed at how much we have begun making use of a simple deWalt driver and adapter. It has an amazing amount of torque for its size and has become a quick reach-for-it tool any time there is enough clearance to use it. I've recently started collecting the adapters so they just live on the sockets in my toolbox. How's that for lazy!
