View attachment 1210710 These are the most often used tools I have. Typically used to find and extract the bolt, nut or washer I dropped into an almost unreachable recess under the hood. I'm not kidding. My crap never hits the ground.

That magnet can be a GODSEND.

I was once doing a valve adjustment on an old GSX-R 1100. They use shim-over-bucket adjustment with itty-bitty shims under the rocker arm. There is a little spring that lets you slide the rocker arm of to the side so you can then remove the shim with a magnet. See here:

I was pulling one of the shims, and just as I got it on the magnet, my thumb slipped. The roacker arm smacked that little sucker right off te end of my magnet and I watched in horror as the shim dropped right down the cam chain tower. :bang::crybaby:

I fished with my magnet for about 45 minutes -felt like eternity, but finally got it out.
That little magnet saved from doing a tear-down pro bono.

Awesome tractor Eric!! Who restored it?
thanks for the kind words guys. She's a 51 model. Johnny I couldn't tell you the restoration history. It in good working condition. Runs great and should break it in pretty soon. I have to grade out the driveway after pouring the pad and a few other jobs. It was converted to 12V which is kinda nice. But all in all I am beyond thrilled. I've wanted one of these since I was a kid. Was chatting with Stacy a couple weeks ago and mentioned that if I had a blank check to go get a tractor, it would be an 8N. Happy early birthday to me. Shed plans are underway. Wife was teasing me that we have 5 cars yet the tractor is what's in the garage. :hillbilly:

And Johnny I agree.....this is quickly becoming one of my favorite threads.

Hello my name is John and I have been a tool addict for 47 years.

Great video on this subject:

The guy is a Honda mech but because it's JIS it's pretty similar to my tool setup.

Everyone with Toyota Land Cruisers should have plenty of these:

Screwdriver Sets | Screwdrivers | Hand Tools | VESSEL TOOLS

Vessel is the OEM OTC tool provider for Toyota in Japan. Many of these drivers used to be available in the US but Toyota deemed them "non-import" status and they are not available in the US anymore with the "TOYOTA" logo.

I bring in the Toyota versions mainly because, well, I'm a nerd. That said, these are what I use when working on LC's. Very reasonably priced as well.

I've found a cheap headlamp makes any job underneath or under hood much better.

I like how @kulangot had an EDC tool section!!

Headlamp is an essential for me now a days. I've always got three or four kicking around between the truck and the "junk" drawer at the house.

EDC dept here. Well at least in the truck. Almost fixes anything Toyota. Came with the cruiser and the 45 rocks the same duo from my parts rig

Puller won't be here till Wednesday, but the transmission pilot bearing had to get replaced on Friday, so the trusty mechanic's bread was brought out:

This is pretty good

Some of you read that I bought a needle scaler a couple weeks back, it died yesterday

Needle scaler regular price $39.99
sale price $17.00
Special deal, buy a one year extended warranty and you get the tool for half price

Half price $8.50
warranty $6.99

Out the door for $15.99

Two weeks later the tool dies, but hey I have a two year replacement warranty. I am told that the needle scaler I bought has been discontinued and replaced with a new model and

it is $59.99

She tells me I have to pay the difference, then buy a NEW extended warranty if I want one. I explained that I bought a brand new scaler and a warranty, the fact I got a killer deal does not change that 2 year replacement warranty. I told her I was not leaving without a brand new scaler and the warranty I bought does not go away because I used it. She starts on about what is corporate gonna say? I told her that they were so hot to sell warranties it came back and bit them on the butt.

I walked out the door with a brand new $59.99 scaler, a brand new extended warranty with proper part and serial numbers of the NEW scaler, all for the original

$15.49 !! not a penny from me yesterday.

Life is Good :)

but what is your time worth? did it cost you an hour? plus gas?

The time and fuel is a loss no matter what I do, just happy that I came away with what I should have rather than the BS I was first told by the manager. You can get what you want at times if you stand your ground.

I'm with you Stan, nothing better than making them choke on their own BS. and newer/better tools are always a plus.

dumb question time.... what's a needle scaler do? I suspect remove rust and scale by beating the crap out of a surface, but have never seen one in use.

You nailed it. Vibratory metal fingers scratching away at the surface to remove oxidation

You are exactly right. I have a cast iron motor in the shop that has rust, in all the knocks and crannies. I wanted it cleaned up for paint so I tried a needle scaler, perfect for the job. It'll work well on things like frame rust as well. It leaves marks on aluminum and sheet metal so not a good idea there. You'll vibrate a while after use.

I am a big fan of snap on pliers. I have a few pair of old HD snapon snap ring pliers (dark ones on the left) that were instrumental in rebuilding my NV4500.
