i was a professional mechanic for a number of years and I also have a tool fetish.
Now I work on houses, I have a whole line of other tools.
I still have lots of Snao-On, and I love them, but for a hobby, it's way too expensive to buy now.
I always buy the best tools money will allow. I do own some HF stuff, but with limited success.

sadly my desire to fix everything myself causes me to have so many tools...I started with a mechanics setup...then a woodworker/ cabinet builder..then add on some gunsmith/machinists tools, trim carpenter, tile guy, plumber, electricians......but if its broke, I can likely fix it

The shop had the beam and one trolley when we bought it. I added a second trolley and a pair of Yale 1 Ton chain hoists I found at a pawn shop soon after we moved. INVALUABLE!! Using them together here with a pair of load levelers. Makes mating a trans/t-case combo to a motor a breeze to do by yourself.

I have had that same dream for my shop!! Have any more pics of how the second beam was installed? I would imagine the gantry crane would almost eliminate the need for am engine hoist, assuming you can maneuver a vehicle under the chain fall.

Badass!

One beam, two trolleys on one beam. What is being lifted has to be under the beam. The guy that built this shop was smart in that he placed the beam about 3/4 of the way into the shop. You can pull a motor without the vehicle sticking out the overhead door.

A gantry is a set up where one beam rides on two outer beams, forming basically an H. With that set up you can place the chain fall anywhere within the covered area using a trolley on the center beam. Would not work in my shop as the lift goes right up to the bottom of the trusses.

I use the engine hoist all the time, removed the trans/t-case combo from the bench with it today. Set it down under the beam to be picked up with a chain hoist.

Stan has a wicked sweet set up there.

Kinda counts as a tool if you do work with it right? Wanted a 8n since I was a kid. Childhood dream realized. Picked this set up last night. Included the tractor, car trailer, cultivator, spreader and blade. Just need a bush hog and I'll be set. And my awesome wife was the one that found it. Love that girl.

Fun stuff, Eric!!

I spent age 12-14+ using what I think was a Ford Jubilee on the farm. It had two twist screws that would allow you to access the radiator.

When we moved to our last home, I had thought about getting one, but didn't work too hard at it :)

Major tractor envy here.

@kulangot introduced me to my first snap-on truck yesterday:

@kulangot introduced me to my first snap-on truck yesterday:

My condolences John.
You don't realize it yet, but that's an awful lot like saying, "Hey guys, I just shot my first dose of heroin!"

Next thing you know, Snap-On man is there every week for your cash.

"Come on up on the truck and I'll print you a receipt."
Now your on the truck, looking at all that awesome stuff, and you start getting a little itchy.

"How much is that Snap-On Man?"
"Oh that. Only $10 per week."
"Gimme another hit Snap-On Man."

Your wife, your dog, your unborn children, your very sole, sold to chase that dragon...

Fair well, Johnny. We hardly knew ya...

I'll pipe in.

My tool collection is pretty complete if you speak of hand tools. SST's are the only thing really missing which can often times be fabbed.

Big tools becomes a function of weighing cost against how often they might get used.

I don't get to use it near enough but I have to say I love having a kick-a$$ welder.

On the wish list ..... kick-A$$ plasma cutter.

Stuff I have in storage because I don't have the room anymore .... 40 Ton press, Drill press, frame stretcher, engine stands, and cherry picker just never get used.

 This is rapidly turning into my favorite thread. The tool I pictured is an overpriced, but very large, slide hammer.

@Rice , which welder do you have?

These are the most often used tools I have. Typically used to find and extract the bolt, nut or washer I dropped into an almost unreachable recess under the hood. I'm not kidding. My crap never hits the ground.
