“000” grit steel wool does a great job to clean the top of the block.

do any of the scores seen in the bores catch a finger nail?

Mine didn’t but we all know what the rings and pistons looked like.

Your a few thousand ahead in the game AND you picked it up from under a tree. Whatever expenses you incur now aren’t bad at all. Call it an umbrella policy.
And FYI, I’m the friendly neighborhood chick on the forum.

Yep...don't like the look of those score marks. Can you wipe all the crap off the cylinder and re-do those last 2 pics mate..
Almost looks like cracks, or could be aluminium transfer from the piston...I only have an iPad, plus I'm half blind🤓😝

Is it safe to wipe the walls off with simple green and a microfiber cloth or should I skip the SG?

Just use oil.

Yep, go ahead and use a cloth with some SG sprayed on it, just remember to re-oil the bore again after taking pics to prevent surface rust...but you know that anyway👍🏻

I'm having trouble distinguishing between what is actually the wall of the cylinder and what is a reflection...
As I mentioned previously, this looks like a crack, or am I seeing things?

Oh. Wow. I’ll take another look but that looks bad.

Hmmm...thought so...I'm not going mad after all...shut up Timmy..NO, you shut up👹

Hehe..never mind!
Anyway...yeah, that sux balls!
Guess you'll be looking for a new block....

You’re not going mad, thank you SO much for spotting that. I was about to completely miss it. Yep... anyone have a block for sale?

What DOES particularly worry me about that piston is that it wobbles from left to right. It straightens out on the downstroke but when it’s sitting at the top I can push it back and forth with my fingers. :-/

You NEED to pull it. Pull the pan and check the con rod bearings then push up that one piston. It’s really very easy. I’ll bet rings or landings are broken. It shouldn’t wobble. Don’t make mistakes like I had... Your there, just do it.
