Transmission fluid change ??

I was searching this a while back, and found a you tube video of this. The only tranny I have personally serviced was a GM turbo 400 in my tow vehicle.
If you drop the pan , there is a filter that should be replaced. I bought the complete service kit, but have yet to do the job.

For the 80 series transmissions, what is the recommended interval for the filter change?

80 trans. filters are a metal screen that do not need to be replaced, and some argue are self cleaning when you drain the ATF the action of the fluid leaving the pan out the drain plug cleans the screen, although from threads I've read many do drop the pan and clean the screen with compressed air then re install FWIW.

The filter doesn't "need" to be replaced. You can simply take it off and rinse it out, but there is a gasket on it that gets hard and brittle with age. Since I had to drop the pan anyway to replace my throttle cable I just went ahead and replaced the filter.

I just finished doing a trans (A442F) drain and fill. The first drain netted 5L. I then reinstalled the sump plug and left it for 5 days, removing the plug every day or two. I ended up draining a total of 8.5L, which is about 50% capacity.

The fluid I drained only had 12000km and was in perfect condition but being it's first fill since being rebuilt, I thought it prudent to check it sooner rather than later. (Wholesale Auto Extreme box)

As a side note, I noticed trans fluid leaking from an unidentified location. I also noticed the sump has a cork gasket, and this got me thinking. So I grabbed a 10mm socket and, sure enough, could nip up all the bolts 90-180deg turn to make them tight. Clearly the casket compresses, causing the bolts to lose their tension. Using the gasket sealant as done by Toyota would prevent this.

Happy travels.

Well I have 80 lc and I changed my atf before I go on trip like 2600km 11days .in Feb I went to desert just sucked some juice out of it but 2 days back I pulled a Toyota hilux pickup truck for good 200km that also include extremely steep mountain climb .which I climbed in low ....now it's gear shifting has got lethargic ...so ATF has to be changed I guess.....although color is okay

I use texmatic chevron ATF in my A442f dex3

A while back I did the "real" tranny fluid change as described in various places on Mud. I used a clear hose off of the tranny cooler and a white 5 gal. bucket that I had pre-marked with a Sharpie in 4 quart increments. With my son helping by sitting in the driver's seat we pumped out all of the old fluid. I never let the pump cavitate or loose suction, knowing when to shut it down based upon the sump capacity and my measurements on the bucket. It was pretty easy and I feel real good about the fluid in my transmission now. I probably won't do that baselining again, nor feel the need to - at least for a long time.

Tried to find torque specs having trouble. I have a 97 LX450. Have drained trans fluid and changing filter today. Needed to know filter torque spec and pan specs. Also wondering about tightening valve body. Wanted to make sure it was tight and to spec. Drain plug as well.

Pull the trans plug
Measure the amount drained~3.25 - 3.5 US quarts
Reinstall the trans plug:doh:
Use a small funnel and refill through the dip stick
Check level
:)
The last 2 times I pulled the transmission drain plug on my 94, I've gotten way more then 3.5 quarts out of it. Both times i got a little over 6 quarts out of it.

Yeah you wouldn't happen to know the torque specs would you? Yeah you're right. I drove the car around before I drained it, and I got around 6.5 quarts.

Amazing Does your LC have the bus trans IIRC 442 model?

My fluid must have been low. I ended up putting in 7.0 quarts!! :0 had just enough left over from my power steering fluid flush and change. Down to the last drop. It was close Almost overfilled. It is on the second mark on the hot side. I drained a total of 6 quarts. Before draining I ran the truck for 45 mins about 30 miles. She shifts like butter now.

I ended up hand tightening everything. No leaks. I had tightened and then did a snug with the wrench. No leaks. Happy with the new gasket. Will be easy to service next time. I wanted to tighten the valve body but was to afraid of screwing something up. Maybe next time

I have a 96 and pulled off line of tranny cooler. Got almost exactly 4 qts, and refilled with the same. Next time pulled drain plug on pan and refilled. Volume was about the same. Fluid looked like new and smelled like new.

What most fail to realize is that it's not a drain and fill system as there is a lot of fluid "stuck" in the torque converter, so unless you exchange a few times your only draining about half the volume.

The filter is like a window screen and only catches large debris. If it is dirty you have larger problems.

These fluid exchanges at normal pressure have proven to be fine, but forced flush exchanges (higher pressure) have cause some older transmissions to fail as they dislodge dirt which causes issues.

Yeah I figured doing it myself was the best option. Just by refreshing like I did. I rather save the $ and learn something honestly. Fun to work on too. My old fluid did not look too horrible magnets were not that coated either. Pan was fairly clean. It had to be a little low though considering I put in 7 quarts:0

Has anyone added a temp sensor to there tranny? I would like to do this but I would like to put the sensor in a line somewhere instead of the drain plug. Prob should have waited to do the fluid because I will loose a substantial amount when installing the sensor I think..

I think there may be some confusion here. When people are saying they only got 4 qts. out, they're talking about just draining via the drain plug, not removing the pan. You removed the pan, correct? And then added 7 qts.?
