Hell for over 15 years I’ve switched all of my Toyotas that are older (Non-WS fluid) to Dexron 6. It’s backwards compatible and fully synthetic with higher temp capabilities. It’s easy to source in bulk and relatively cheap. Also that fluid will be easy to source for many decades to come. Zero issues in all vehicles as the fluid is compatible, plus some now have smoother shifts. Well over 100k on multiple vehicles with zero transmission concerns or failures.
Sorry if this is a silly question, but what brand of Dexron VI are you running? I think Dexron VI is a type, not a brand. Perhaps I'm confused. Thanks, just wanting to know what's been working for you. I've been using Valvoline MaxLife ATF in a bunch of Toyotas and Hondas, and I've been very happy with it.

Are we talking about the red bottle of valvoline max life?

Just putting this here for future searches:

Looks like the Mobil 1 has a slightly higher Kinematic viscosity at both 40'C and 100'C, FWIW

Since this is basically an oil thread, I may as well muddy the waters with whatever random thing I've ever run... 😉

Redline D4 worked very well in my Tundra (a340F - similar trans). I suspect, for half the money, the Valvoline will probably work just as well.

What year/model Tundra?

Looks like the Redline D4 synthetic ATF is close to the same viscosity as the Mobil 1.

I changed to the redline fluid at around 60,000 miles at the same time as I did a transgo kit, so it's hard to say what improvements were due to the shift kit, what to attribute to D4 and what to attribute to just using fresh fluid. That said, it felt massively improved. It has done more miles since the change than it had on the clock when I did it and it still feels just as solid as the day I filled it back up.

I keep meaning to do the same to the cruiser, but haven't had the ambition to tear it apart yet. Then again, I rarely tow anything with the cruiser. The Tundra gets tougher jobs.
