I've removed rust, grease, and old paint and I've primed and enameled parts. Turns out that my 46 mm crank nut socket is dead nuts perfect for driving in the new seal. Waiting for the stealership to call me with new timing cover bolts. I have a sneaking suspicion they'll not be correct as the guy behind the counter was a bit dismissive and seemed like he hated life. I may be calling beno in the next week or so...

Weird swing out shape on your cover. Mine doesn’t have that. What year are you driving again?

That's some "custom body work"... a few years ago I had to replace the exhaust pipe gasket at the manifold and I didn't feel like going through the spaghetti up top to remove the shield so I bent it with pliers so I could reach that third flange nut. I didn't do a great job of getting it bent back... if I even tried at all. Door jam says feb 87

I see a timing plate gasket. Your not going that deep are you?

Got the air rail cleaned, painted, and installed. New check valve is in place. I found an after market part available by special order through NAPA. The threads are the same but the hose end is much smaller in diameter. I figured it would work better than a broken one and it cost $17 as opposed to $80 elsewhere.

Cut my fan shroud in two. Fresh paint on all rust parts. Cured for a week-ish and getting ready to go back on. We dropped the oil pan Tuesday but failed to get the new gasket installed without destroying it. So I'm ordering a new one. I'll post pics when I get around to finishing that job.

I did some general cleaning and degreasing up front around the grill and fender areas. Scrubbed as much rust as I could and sprayed rust retarding primer and a solid coat of enamel where the sickness lives. I know it won't last forever, but I couldn't justify putting new stuff on top of old rust. The battery exploded at some point and everything rusted so I took care of what I was able. Getting the rubberized coating off the battery tray took an entire 6 pack...

Well, that was a long break from posting on this thread... I guess I’ll finish the last bit of this saga by saying I got everything back together and swapped out all my vacuum lines and got it all running with a rebuilt carb. It ran like a champ. But still failed emissions several times after that. I finally did a cheat code and plugged a vac line to allow clean air to dump straight into the catalytic converter. I passed emissions and went about my life... fixing things here and there...

Fast forward to 2020.... my roommates were wigging out hard about covid so I decided to move closer to a friend of mine in Denver and start a custom instrument building company with him. Riots nearly burned his neighborhood down that summer and he and his wife decided to leave the state in a hurry.

So, having such short notice, not knowing what the future held for the city, state, country, and world I decided not to tie myself to a lease and I made a difficult decision and I put 99% of my belongings in storage and challenged myself to live out of the cruiser. I had some big projects I wanted to get done on the truck and having no rent would help me get it done. I thought three months would be enough time to get it done and figure out my next move.

I bought some new stands and a nice jack and stored them along with my 20 ton press in my best friend’s garage which I’ve used a lot...

It’s been more than a year.... I still live in the truck with my German Shepard... and I’m still doing major work on this truck... why not? Gasoline is going by the way side so let’s cling to it bitterly while cursing Tesla motors and Elon’s sky link!!!

I will try to dig up pictures I have taken over this time and post some kind of story here...

Here are some pictures of the engine with fresh vacuum lines and all buttoned up from 2018. I also replaced the entire brake system that winter and installed some LED headlights from city racer.

About that sagging rear end....

The suspension was really giving up. It was very apparent when we drove up the trail to the shooting range.

I had been putting off that job because of this gnarly damage that was there when I bought the truck...

At the beginning of January, just after our shooting trip I decided to get after it. I found someone on Craigslist selling leaf packs from an early 60 series truck. He had the hangers attached! Holy cow did I hit the jackpot?! Well not really...

It turns out that the early model had three rivets where as the later models have 4 rivets.... the hunt was on again.... and it was a long time.

I found the hanger I needed from SOR.com who cut it off a frame they had laying around. It was NOT cheap... I think I ended up paying close to $200 for the one hanger, but it was exactly what I needed.

I decided to learn to weld so I started getting some things I needed to get into that trade.

About that time I was getting ready for work early in the morning and slipped on the steps and punched the corner of the wall with a half closed fist as I was trying to catch myself. Yeah it was a really gnarly break of the 4th metacarpal which was shoved back into my wrist and shattered. Miraculously I didn’t require surgery and it healed up 99.99%... but I didn’t do a whole lot of wrenching for the rest of the year...

You're a trouper man - hang in there! You have done lots of good work on that truck. Nice M1A, too!

Jump to 2020 and everything got crazy. As if I needed to point that out again to anyone...

This is when I decided to move into the truck and get after things once and for all.

I started with body mounts knowing I would be lifting the truck. My new jack would be able to lift the truck from the frame and axles but I wasn’t sure if I could reach the pinch welds on the body to lift it high enough to get the old bushings out and new ones in.

I ordered a kit from 4crawler after checking, rechecking, and re-reading that website about a hundred times.🙄 The bushing kit is fantastic. Don’t let the website fool you...

I did reuse a few of the OEM bolts and washers because I forgot to order the extra washers from 4crawler. They were in good shape so I felt okay with it.

Wow, what a difference that made. I was kinda shocked at how much smoother it handled and shifted just from fixing body mounts. I highly recommend it to anyone who has passed over that job for other more “fun” projects.

Next, I had to contend with the leaky timing cover gasket and water pump that I had installed earlier in this thread. Yeah it started leaking almost immediately and I was so frustrated with it I just kept topping things off and ignoring it for a while. Let’s get it!

So in two days I pulled it off during some of the worst wild fires Colorado had ever seen. It was truly an apocalyptic scene out here with ash falling constantly. I was in a public parking spot around the corner from my friend’s house with used condoms and needles laying around with broken bottles etc.. just to make things even more third-world-esq...

Because this was a very stressful and fast paced weekend I have no pictures, but I used OEM parts for everything and it’s all holding up great a year later.

Edit: I lied. I did find some pictures of this weekend. Look at the sky...
