To line....or not to line...that is my question.

Line it, most folk that are looking for a 92 fj are looking to use for it for what it was built for, and liner is way cheaper than a real paint job. But your call.

Any modification like that is going to make it much harder sell.

By far the number one thing people ask me about my truck is the liner. I have yet to meet one who didn’t really like it and the overall idea of not having to care for paint.

It’s pretty much the first thing I would do to any older rig I bought as it is so nice not having to care for paint.

Also, if I sold my 80 then I wouldn’t have it anymore and that would be dumb.

I guess I'm the only one, lol.

I don't like the look of liner and I would view it as a detractor if i was shopping for a truck. It makes it too easy for a seller to cover up rust and body issues that you would likely find if it had paint. I got my fj62 painted in a single-stage enamel for $800 and it looked pretty good. And pretty tough, as paint goes (think tractor paint). Wouldn't pass muster at a car show, but helluva lot better than 30 year old paint or liner IMO.

Form or function your choice. DO you want your 80 to look like a luxury SUV or an offroad beater? I loved my Line-X while it was new and fresh, it looked great! Now that it is faded and the color is eh, I just like it. But it has held up very very well except for the fading. Running Texas scrub brush down the side of the truck, rocks in Moab, my tires stick out 2-3" from the body and throw dirt and mud. Paint would be a mess but the line-x is unphased.

I don't care for the all lined look personally. All the liner jobs I've seen lol like garbage. I have talked to the chemists and engineers from Upol about spraying raptorliner over my monstaliner and in the conversation discovered that not only are the 2 compatible ,as should Als liner, but that it can be thinned and sprayed on to a very light orange peel texture if someone wanted to do so. Meaning you can likely spray on ALs liner to a MACCO paint job appearance.

I've used Durabak and am about to switch to Monstaliner. I recommend you do it. Never had any real concern after wheeling it for years.

Buying a 26 year old vehicle with peeling paint and worrying about “resale value” means you’ve already lost.

Why are you planning on selling it in 3-5 years?

Say you get $500 less for it in 3-5 years is that going to put you out on the street? I say do what YOU want and worry about the market for your 31 year old vehicle in 5 years.

Wrap it!

Very few people will go up to the owner of a rig and tell them what they don't like about it. And while some may like it on your personal rig, there is a difference between someone liking what you have done vs actually wanting that on their own vehicle to the point of buying a vehicle with it. I personally think some lined rigs look great, but do I want that on my own rig? No. Just my opinion. The OP asked about resale value, as far as your personal concern for resale value of your rig, I have no clue who you are or what your rig has done to it or if your even concerned about resale value. When it comes to resale value, looks are everything to the majority. A 80 series that has a good look to it(as in looks good to the mass populace, not to the vehicle owner and 3 or 4 die hard gear heads) will pull 15 to 20k or more in a sale. If something has been done to seriously take away from the look in the view of the majority, the seller will have a tough time getting over 7k for it, it's possible to get more, but will take a very long time to find that person. I had this problem with my last 80 because it had a dent in the quarter panel, it bothered everybody. Absolutely killed the value. I can think of a 80 in the for sale section right now that is in the ladder situation.

I think some liner on the lower portion of the body can look good and doesn’t necessarily detract from the value/appeal of the vehicle. However, as with many others I’m not a huge fan of lining the entire vehicle top to bottom.

What 80 series is selling (actually selling) for 25-30k?

My thoughts ...

I have never considered resale value when making a vehicle purchase or modifying them. Buy it and keep it forever.
Buy it cheap enough and who cares about the resale.
I'm not sure how many people are buying these trucks for DD with usually ~200k+ miles and 13mpg. Most seem to want to get off road a bit and unless you are in the desert that usually means creeks and trees, so scratches then.

I just Monstalined my truck up to the top body line on the doors. It's higher than most people go, but it felt good when we went wheeling and it was eating branches on occasion.

If your buying the truck for snow use and on road, liner is likely overkill, but if you are wheeling at all I don't think there is a better option for longevity. As far as hiding rust and such goes, take good pics of the truck before and during the process to put a future buyer at ease.

I don't know man. I never said anything about selling for 25 to 30k. You sure you're talking about my prior post and not someone else's?

I misinterpreted you statement of 15-20k or more as 15-20k more. My bad.

Even still. If the OP spent $10k on a 91 with peeling paint I have two sitting in my garage that he can have for that price! Hell the one doesn't have peeling paint so it should be worth closer to 20!

Are either of them diesel or have a ls motor?

I went back and forth on a full-on paintjob vs bedliner/monstaliner for a long time and eventually settled on lining the truck. I just couldn't fathom paying $$$ for a quality paintjob that I might scratch or ding up on the next trail. The resale value probably will take a hit if I sell, but the practicality/usability for my time owning the truck was well worth the decision. $700 = durable, semi-matte paint, easy to touch up.

Here's a few photos of the paint, the monstaliner thread has plenty of other sweet rigs too.
Monstaliner Bedliner

^ let's be clear, there's a few things going on with this truck other than the monstaliner job.

First of all, the monstaliner job is a hue and color very similar to that used for that type of track, barely noticeable from afar, second of all it seems to have been done quite well, thirdly the truck is from the pictures at least minty clean, with the wheels, tires, lift, it's been put together quite well.

Most people I've seen that monstaline trucks or cars, go with some dull matte finish, or grey or military weird camo, don't apply it well, and the whole thing looks like a ghetto mad max truck. There was one "matted out" monsta lined 80 selling in town for the longest time it was a 3F but the thing spent over 1.5 years on the classified and they were asking less than half of what some 80s are posted for ( yes including 3fs)... if that specific truck would have been as well put together as that 62, it would have sold for 130%-150% of the asking price.
