Here ya go gents...

Didn't get much done after this since my back was killing me. I'm laid up now taking it easy having a nice Ballast Point Sculpin IPA.

Before starting it up I went back and checked all the intake and exhaust valve lash settings and they were still dead on at .10mm intake and .35mm exhaust. Primed the fuel and hit the glow plugs for 10s and she was alive.

Clutch engagement was good. I was able to shift through the gears, etc. Oh and my speedometer works now! Thanks to Georg for replacing that gear...

It was funny because my 3 year old was yellin' "go daddy!"

It was vibrating pretty good being on jack stands and all (as evidenced by all the sh*t rattling off the cowl), but I hope being on tires will help a little.

Don't pay any attention to my disaster of a garage. That's tomorrow's project.

Anyways, enjoy:

On the phone app so it won't be long, but don't worry about the size of your oil cooler. Anything you choose will be fine. In many euro models they didn't even get one. Just your warm countries and M'erica. Great work. I'm still years out from finishing mine but need to go back and read your whole thread. Fix your back and don't go into the seat to fast. It isn't worth it.

oh man, nice work. i love the rattle those engines give. so distinctive. i love your build and am excited to be moving forward on mine. you are so close to driving it again. good work

That sounds good and from the lack of excess smoke it looks like a healthy motor

Last night some goodies had arrived by the time I got home:

Mishimoto oil cooler (P/N: MIO-MMOC-10BK) which is quite a bit smaller than the stock MBZ unit but I think it should work. It's the same size as the Derale 10 row cooler (using for power steering cooler) but the overall construction is much nicer and seems beefier with the aluminum brazed -10AN male fittings AND it has a lifetime warranty (Derale is 1 yr only).

Wifey picked up some new OEM Toyota fill plugs and crush washers for the front and rear axles. I got tired of the 24mm socket slipping off and bashing my knuckles!

Auto Meter Sport Comp II oil pressure gauge. I wish I would've gone with the super simple VDO gauge style but it's too late to send back my pyro and boost gauges so I'm just going to roll with them.

Still waiting on the FJ60 coolant overflow bottle and some other stuff but it should be here soon.

I hope to get the engine buttoned up for the last time this weekend with the final coolant fill, etc.

Looking good! That looks like the same oil cooler I'm running.

Please post pics of where you mounted the pyrometer probe.

They came out like butter when I pulled them. The turbo was a bit of a pain however.

Well, all is not well in CruiserLand...I don't recall hearing it last time, but I've got some serious chatter coming from the clutch area. Goes away when clutch is depressed and it's there whether the clutch slave is installed or not.

Good thing I'm going on leave in a few days, I need to get away from this thing for a bit. I'm guessing I'm going to have to pull the tranny/trans...

Here's a video of the madness... Ugggghhh

So I did a lot of readin' and had some hopes that maybe this was just a "noisy" NV4500 since some of them just clatter around. It's not like it's a very refined trans after all. Though it also might be that 4 qts of the specified lubricant might not be enough with the PTO filter I installed. So added another quart, set the clutch fork to .030" and started it up again.

Same clatter...

Man oh man.

I put a screwdriver to it to diagnose it and it's definitely the transmission. I ran it through 1st and 2nd gear (on jacks) and the problem sounds just as bad when under load.

I'm pretty sure I "got took" by an FleaBay trans shop. It sounds the input bearing, idler shaft, or counter shaft bearings are trashed. Guess I'm back to square one on this thing...I'm glad I'm going on leave tomorrow. Going to do some dove hunting in Alabama and then head to the lake. Much needed R&R. I might make a bad decision if I was around all week, haha! This is what it's all about!!!

I don't have a lot of advice to offer but did you try all gears? I am thinking you have something like the reverse fork not holding the gear cluster and it is trying to ride into gear or something along those lines. I would pull the top cover and check all the forks for proper alignment before condemning the trans. Just an idea but usually it is something simple that manifest itself as something else.

It is human nature to assume the worst first :D

I tried it in all gears. It makes the noise even in reverse. That rules out what your saying right?

It does, I would still pull the top cover first. Good Luck

Will do, thanks for the advice.

I finally rigged up the accelerator linkage today. Feels good to get that done. I forgot to get a pic of the mod to the pedal, but it's super simple, I'll get it tomorrow.

Here's a short video of the linkage in action

Luckily I kept all the cruise control linkages and brackets. Super simple and pretty slick I think.

I can't take credit for it as I think either Georg or Don over on PBB came up with it on Mr Manny's OM617 powered 40.

This was the last mod needed for a test drive, I just need to figure out the trans rattle. Pulled the top cover and it looks clean as a pin and no noticeable problems. There's 5.5 qts of AMSOIL in there by the way...
