Hi - The weatherstrip is Automotive EPDM that is custom extruded and then goes through a miter and bonding process on all four edges to create the finished product. As you can imagine it is very labor intensive, but I am happy with the results.

Part of the reason for the weatherstripping is my own need. I have a 66 and 71 FST that are in process right now. Plus it just needed to be made.

re: the door weatherstrip, yours looks great. It will give me the confidence to take mine apart and then determine if the OEM rubber is salvageable or perhaps if I have to buy yours. VERY COOL.

Engine Progress and QUESTIONS!!!

OK Guys and gals,
It was time to crank ye olde' six and see what gives.

Firstly, i noticed after much cranking I have a few issues. My ignition switch for some reason supplies +12 to the coil when the ignition is in the "ON" position but does not provide +12V when cranking. Surprisingly this contankerous old girl did start a few times given this condition. My voltmeter confirms this and if I hotwire the coil she cranks and starts right up. Any ideas? My switch bad?

Next, I have always had this issue since buying the rig, but should probably do something about it. My starter teeth engage the flywheel about 50% of the time, the other 50% she grinds and I have to retry. Anything I can fix in the starter?

And last but not least for today... In the short amount of time I ran this engine before frame off resto began there were no issues, but once I got fluids in her and started her up the water pump immediately got to "weeping". What is the best source for an F water pump for my rig? SOR?

I would check the starter solenoid on your starter, they can go out, and cause periodic grinding noise

Thanks D on the thoughts on starter. I started a new thread as well as I noticed the pinion teeth look iffy when I pulled the starter last night.


Progress and status so far.....

I am hoping to get my fenders/hood today from paint shop.....it's been a while.

I was able to get the engine all sorted out, including getting the carb set up really well and getting the timing dialed in. I had an issue with my water pump going out and had to mod a new one to get it to match my OEM pump.

In addition to the water pump going out, I was also leaking fluid from my transfer case, not a the seal, but rather through the nut/splines. When I took it apart I decided to rebuild my ebrake with a kit from SOR. Got everything installed and leak solved, but unfortunately I can't seem to get the brake adjusted so that the pads engage..... ugh.

I also had an issue with the 3 on the tree getting 2nd and 3rd gear, so after some fiddling yesterday I was able to get that sorted out and....

Drum roll please.....

Took my baby out for it's first test drive around the block.

Baby drove great. Brakes felt good and the FD engaged perfectly. Funny without the tranny hump plate how well you can hear a brand new clutch breaking in! Was a nice motivational trip around the block!

I am not entirely sure how to confirm that my heat riser is working correctly. I broke the damned studs on the thermostat-y side taking it apart and got it back together, but I guess need to confirm it functions. I live in sunny CA so could honestly just open it up full time I guess. Is yours giving you trouble? Are there issues with "defeating" it?

Anyone have any idea what the hell could be wrong with my parking brake? Pull the handle and it doesn't yet engage. Since I got my leak fixed on the drum I really don't want to pull it back apart....

Is there a later drum that would fit my rig and be "too big" that a PO may have installed? I just cannot imagine how new pads wont engage...

Chris - have you adjusted the shoes via the nut on the backside of the mounting plate? Checking to be sure. Also- you may want to have someone pull the handle for you while you listen to the activity inside the drum (shoes expanding, etc). Helps to twist the handle enough to avoid the chatter (noise) in the pawl. Your cable may have slipped the fitting. Just some ideas.

Thanks man, like they say, once you go black you never go back. Except when you buy black wheels and think they should be gray and go through all the damned trouble to paint them only to realize you messed up and then have to repaint them black..... Ya, except that case.

BTW, Got my hood and fenders back from paint. they look damned nice. Should be fun to mount up fenders...we'll see. I assume there will be some scratches to polish out... I already painted the inside of fenders black and will have to do the hood. Should be interesting masking off the "vents" on the hood. Ya'll were right on the black in the engine compartment, I love it.

It frankly does not get too cold here either, if it does i just turn it by hand to closed and open it by hand.

I think in cali you be safe to lock it open

I've done this way in the past. Jack the passenger's rear end as much as possible. May sure it's stable before crawing underneath.

Fender-a-palooza

Alrighty,
Got my fenders and painted the inner wells black. Stayed up late last night and got them mounted. Alignment is not perfect, I think I may need to shim the front of the cab to raise it up a bit so that the alignment is better unless anyone has a better idea. Take a look at my crappy cell phone photos in the wee hours.

See the transition from cab to fender in the first pic? I need to figure out how to fix that....

Chris - from the outside picture, it looks like the tub is on top of the running board horn. If this is the case, then it needs to come up. Also, if reusing the old body mounts, they compress and will drop height, but this a little bit bigger than that typically looks. If new (or reused for that matter) make sure you have one of the thick body mounts on the perch directly next to the running board and underneath the front floor. You will also want to get the bib and hood positioned before you lock down your fenders, aprons and tub. It takes some tuning to get right and it is really scary doing that with fresh paint. Recommend using that easy release 3M tape in between moving parts.

I have a set of the new poly mounts from $OR. Will doublecheck my body mounts tonight and loosen everything up (and am using 3M blue tape) whilst I tweak.

Will let you know how it goes. If you want me to take a picture of something in particular to give you more info let me know.

The poly mounts work well. They tend to compress easily if over tightened. Also, if the mounts on your tub are a little squished, it will also drop your height. You will be amazed by the impact that a little change in height at the mount will do, downstream. The beauty of geometry. Dont be afraid of a little shimming, but you will want that bib and hood in place before you get that process underway.

I am most interested with that first mount on the tub. As you go. make sure to mind the places where there are connections bridging the body and the frame - transmission linkage, steering column, so on. These can be sensitive to tub jacking and the like.

Alrighty,
Got my fenders on (without bib yet) and am pretty happy with the results. Not a 100 pt show car "gap" by any means, but lined up pretty well with room to move on the trail. Took some outside pics of the sulfur yellow with my better camera. Enjoy.
