Way back in December or January I was contacted by a fella that had a 40 he bought sight unseen (strike 1) and wanted to get me to get it drivable for him.

I was headed his direction in North Carolina to drop off Moe Green in Asheville so I figured I would just swing up through Beech Mountain and grab it.

I also needed to drop off my 45 at Rocket City for a quick project so I loaded up the gooseneck and headed north

Based on a couple photos and a little back and forth I thought I could help this guy out.

He has named her Josie.

I have temporary renamed her the KY 40.

Not just because it came out of Kentucky.

Instead I think of the large amounts of lube the seller should have used on the buyer to pass this one off for what he sold it for.

After dropping Todd's 40 in Asheville I plugged in Beech Mountain.

The route took me through the belly of the mountains that were most effected by Hurricane Helene.

Blindly following maps into Beech took me on some of the wildest roads. There is literally no way into this town that is 36' trailer friendly.

Mix in closed bridges and collapsed roads with a few hundred dump trucks sharing the same curves and I was mentally whacked by the time I finally arrived.

So how many $10 tubes of KY jelly did the guy pay for it? Oh and did he get a kiss too;)
Just wait until you see this thing up close.

Not yet.

More story first.

This town is perched on a mountain top and there is really no big parking lot to meet in but we ended up in the community center parking lot for his neighborhood.

We met in person and it turns out he's a retired firefighter out of Charlotte working on his second career working for the rec department in Beech.

When he had the truck shipped in it had to get dropped down mountain and just getting it home involved the clutch going out and 3 overheats.

He gave me an out as soon as I popped the hood and saw the mess the PO had made but he immediately won me over when he said he wanted the rock Whomper cage, bucket seats and wakeboard speakers ripped out.

We loaded it up on the promise that if I thought it was not worth saving I would not even start the project.

So it's April now. I've been staring at this thing for 4 months.

I had no idea if it was going to start or not.

I finally finished the Saudi 84 and it's time to get started on this one.

Normally I pre order the parts on these before I start on them but we are taking this project one step at a time.

We really don't want to end up with a $60,000 truck but in the end it's pretty much useless as it is where it overheats and the clutch is screwed.

So, once I determined under all of this funk, the 2F under here is solid so it's all ahead full.

Pros...

Solid body. One color.
2F/4 speed
Toyota front disc conversion

Cons....

Keep following.

Back to this thing ....

Lifting the top off. It had 6 bolts holding it down.

This genius put down some floor cover then bolted the cage down into the cover making the trans cover unserviceable

Also they clearly welded together in the truck so I had to use ratchet straps to pull it in enough to clear the plates

Wakeboard pods and rock whopper cage is outta here

These seats.

Absolutely horrific. Not only are they incredibly ugly and offensive but your legs hit the bottom of the wheel. It's like getting into a rock buggy getting over the side bolsters and under the wheel.

For some reason the door stops were off and the ears on the doors are good.

Look at this high quality hardware. Nothing but the best. I bet there are 100 holes this guy has drilled into the tub
IMG_7268.jpeg

Seats out so I could get you some good pics of the wiring

How to remove said wires....

IMG_7271.jpeg

Scotch locks are nice to see compared to the house wire nuts

Out.

You guys are spoiled rotten, I would love to have that 40. To me everything can be easily fixed but sheet metal work and that doesn't look it needs any. That rig looks great.

The un-****ing has begun. Stay tuned.
