I'm a big sissy - I shoot ARs. I have been known to be sore after a day of Sporting Clays, though :)
Also makes a big difference if you get the stock set for you, by a decent gunsmith, so you are positioning right and the recoil is better received.

I have a Remington 1100 Competition that allows you to do just that, it makes a huge difference. The pad also can be set at a twist. I played with it a while until I found the sweet spot for me.

Yea - I need to buy this before my chance goes away. The SBE III is out now, so finding parts may be hard for the SBE II.

Benelli ComforTech Raised Gel Comb

You guys and your fancy shotguns! Mine's in all in camo and ugly with no carbon fiber or wood showing! :)

Accidentally went to the Dixie Gun & Knife show in Raleigh today, story I gave Regina was we are looking for bullets to reload the Henry 45 colt. And, I would be "casually" looking for a wheel gun to match with the Henry, look what I accidentally found...EXACTLY what I was looking for. The Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan in .454 Casull-.45 Colt. Shop dropped retail price to something I couldn't resist so I accidentally brought it home with me. Awful lot of accidents happening today.

I wanted this specific revolver to companion the Henry in 45 Colt. The round on the left is a 250g factory round running at 1000 ft/sec where the round on the right is 325g +P Bear round running at 1325 ft/sec, not sure if I need to worry about finding a round with more muzzle energy. I need to chrono the bear round out of the Henry to see what the muzzle velocity is out of the 16.5" barrel. Guess I'm needing to hit the range tomorrow to see if I can hold onto it with that +P Bear round thru it....

@JohnVee she may like the Ruger SP101. Heather has one and likes it. .357 Mag

You've mentioned that one before. Tough to beat it.

Problem is, she hates wheel guns (purely for aesthetic reasons). Damned kids today. But they're seriously one of the best bets for a nightstand gun, or any sudden emergency, that anybody can fire reliably.

But...ideally, in .454 mode, she'll have plenty of time to run away while the bear mauls my already-dead corpse that still holds an expensive and empty 5-shot revolver.

Nice, @Mtbcoach. You've just renewed my desire to get one of those. Gotta see if Sarah's hand will wrap around it. Keep us posted on your results.

Will do, Regina has comitted to coming and shooting it "at least once". My tiny trump hands fit it well, Regina can grip it well also. I waffled on getting the more attratctive and impressive wood grips but felt it I wanted to shoot it, the more tactical grip would help, and it does. The finger grip spacing is just right for my hands...

Looked strongly at those also Stan before taking the 45 colt path with Henry making a rifle in .357 mag. We also at the model 5032 that shoots 45 Auto/45 colt but decided to have something overbuilt for the intended round I'm planning to load in it...

the sp101 has been my CC. sweet to shot and spot on.

Regina succumbed to my incessant whining and went to the range with me today. I had to run a few of the "bear" loads through the Henry and give the new revolver a decent run through. Said it was her civic duty to provide her perspective on the revolver, or as she calls it...the Roger Rabbit gun.

Specs on the load = 45 Colt +P 325g hard cast lead moving 1325 ft/sec 1267 ft/lb energy, not a lightweight load. It was more painful out of the Henry due to the lack of any stock butt pad than it was out of the Alaskan. Regina shot one after some hesitation, handled it well but said not her preference, still loves the Kimber in .45 auto the best.

Question for everyone here....when I lived in Alabama I had my concealed permit. I have not gotten it since we moved to NC. In AL it was $5 and sign a piece of paper. In NC I think I have to take a class and then get a permit? What is the order of what I need to do?

If I just plan on keeping a handgun at home do I need a permit?

Trying to figure out the logistics so I can get a few guns brought over from AL where some of my stuff still resides....and get one in the meantime.

@sleepycruiser You will need to take a concealed carry class. 8hrs on a Saturday, usually. Includes study/test/shooting. Not difficult if you pay attention. You do not need to use the gun you intend to carry, regardless of what people might think.

You take the class which gives you the paperwork to take to the sheriff, make appointment with sheriff for fingerprinting/forms, wait for approval, make appointment with sheriff to pick up license. I forget when you pay the sheriff. Might need to have cash in exact change depending on the county. I cannot recall the CCW reciprocity agreements but you've probably been here too long to take advantage of them, especially if you have an NC drivers license. @weejub? You had that issue, IRRC.

You do not need a permit or license of any kind in NC to simply own or open carry. NC does not register what you own. I do not the specifics about shipping firearms that you own to yourself from another state - will probably need to go through an FFL who will charge you a fee per transfer. There are no hoops to jump through if you're transporting them yourself, other than the legalities of any states you travel though.

If like my move to KS, and I am sure it is:

States recognized other state's CC laws, but if you move, you will likely have to get a new CC permit. Or said another way, although NC will "OK" your visit from AL and using AL CCW while here, AL will no longer support your CC once you physically move. KS gave me three months after date of move. I actually asked the KS State AG :) as I assumed my CC would be good anywhere with reciprocity for the 5 years it was valid :(

JohnVee and Weejub covered most everything .... only item to add is purchase process for buns in NC. For handbuns there are 2 ways to purchase (retail or individual does not matter). Method 1 ... with no CCP go to sheriff's office to pick up a "Pistol Perchase Permit" ($5, 3 day waiting period, can get up to 5 at a time, you surrender the PPP to the seller). Method 2 .... once you have your CCP purchases become much easier .... just show the card and you're good to go.

A quote from the Guilford County Sheriff's Office website. I guess practicing grammar wasn't that important.

Gaining competency with firearms is like learning to drive a car or fly an airplane. You need expert instruction and practice. There is no shortcuts, please practice firearms safety, it could well save your life.

If your county doesn't give about fxxx about making you wait almost until you don't even want to buy a gun any longer, they can can make you wait for the purchase permits as long as they like under the excuse of 'not enough manpower to process in a timely manner'. Last purchase permit I got took over 3 weeks. CCW licenses in Mecklenburg can take 3+ months at times.
