Can someone please help me get it out of my mind that I should just throw a SBC 350 in the 40 and call it a day. I'm so tired of my problems of getting a 30 year old motor to run right. The 55 which has been sitting for 20 years runs better than my 40 and it's never even been out of the neighborhood.

I knew you were having some engine troubles at Barley's but I didn't realize the whole thing was shot. I prefer original motors but when it comes down to it if a 350 will make your 40 run then go for it. I hear parts are a little easier to find too...;)

DO NOT i repeat DO NOT bring this same upon your cruisers............ you are better than this!!!!

have the old 2F rebuilt by some one who knows 2Fs and forget about it.......... mine ran awesome after the rebuild.

what happened to the 2FE???

heck, toss in a sbc. why not?

yeah waaah waaaah wah, keep it toyota, but i mean, really, if it drives it's better than nothing...you said it yourself, nothing beats a 40 during the summer. i bet you can have the conversion done in time for a nice trip to the outer banks in june...

just my 2 cents...(and i'm rebuilding my 2F right now)

I say keep it original but that's just me. I hate to see these old cruisers with swapped in V8's.

I am going the fuel injection route with my 2F soon.

If the only problem is the carb I say you source the fuel injection and have a HAMOM. If it is a mechanical issue...go buy another 2F and throw it in, also a HAMOM, then put injection on it while you are there.

fuel injection is not the dark side :)

I love mine!

stay pure, the rest of us will stay running off camber! ;)

Go Dark Side :flipoff2:. Your 40 is far from pure. Purists only cringe when someone hacks a good Cruiser (hmmmm, didn't mine used to be nice when I first did a frame off?).

You can rebuild your 2F yourself - I did mine after blowing a hole in the top of number 4 and then driving it home from Melbourne to Singer Island blowing smoke the whole way - I was pissed.

I got the 2F from Jim for $75 and ran it till it blew.
Did the rebuild myself for $1,100 in parts and machine work, but that included a new header, did not include a new cam - big mistake - so figure $1,500 for the "right" parts.
Ran a non-USA dizzy and Jim C. carb for years - it sucked!
Fuel Injection - Paid $850 for a used Chevy Astro setup using all the Downey conversion pieces - top notch stuff. Included a DUI dizzy with plug wires. This was easy as it had already been installed and running (except remembering to remove the brown connector to set base timing - same as pulling vacumm line on a non-USA dizzy).

All that being said - it's probably a lot cheaper than a V8, it's beyond reliable, and chugs down between 4 and 600 when krawling.

However, - I want to lose weight and the chevy would accomplish that.

Depends on how much time and money you have to do either.

I have a buddy who rebuilds race engines and would be willing to help me rebuild it. And I have another buddy who has a 350 out of a 69 camaro with 300hp iron heads that he is willing to sell me for 150 dollars. I don't know what to do.

Is the V8 running and in good shape? If so, for $150, get the V8, put it in and get it running like you want.

Then, rebuild the 2F at your own leisure and pace. If you aren't happy with the V8 down the road, put the 2F back in. If you do like the new power plant, you'll have a rebuilt 2F to sell.
