I'm more than pleased with the outcome of the door refurbishment. Should the need ever arise that I have to get back into my door shells for any reason, I beleive the 3M VHB tape will allow it. It sure made for a much cleaner application and finished product. Now for my new OEM latch to arrive and I'll finish up my drivers side door.....Thus, "Door Refurbishment" will be complete.

Very nice work as always Rick, someone(PO) cut a hole in my door liner for what could have been a speaker-blasphemy!!!!! So, I will probably be looking for new door liners. As my rig is a 10/78 manu date but a true '78, I may have to paint as well-I believe the only thing available now is the lighter panels. Wondering what color is available for the seats when I refubish/ cover/springs and cushions those things???

D - It is true that some things in life I'm OCD about, but not all. However, I do pay attention to most details, it's just my nature.
The most important characteristic on that project, as well as any other endeavor, PATIENCE & TIME. It may have taken a few weeks to get all them cleaned up and put back together, but it was my first time. If OEM parts are not available, I do my best to research the best parts to use and that takes time. If I were to do another set of doors, after procuring all the parts, I could do them in a few hours time. Knowledge is the key to doing it correctly and efficiently. You have no idea how many times I put the doors partially back together, only to take them back apart because I didn't like how a part looked.
Oh, another important aspect of doing this type of work, it isn't about STARTING, but having the intestinal fortitude to FINISH the project.
As tstepp mention above, I don't do anything half-ass...I gladly put in a little extra and get the WHOLE-ass!

Did you try a piece of plastic film on the VHB first?

@GA Architect ... I hate you.. great work... I'm starting my doors too soon, they are off and so is the ccot rubber that doesn't fit well . Got some racer65 stuff .. going to clean the iside while I'm at it.

If you lightly place the plastic on the VHB, you can adjust. It wasn't till I physically ran my finger around the plastic/VHB tape before it makes a solid seal. If you take your time, you can separate the plastic sheeting from the tape, so they say....FWIW, I've never used this VHB tape so I don't know how it will hold up, but it gets mostly good reviews.

I've used VHB to secure ballasts for HID lighting on my ATV. If it's strong enough for that, I didn't think you'd be able to remove plastic sheeting from it without ripping/ruining the plastic.
The VHB line over time will gain strength in it's bond - but if nothing else it's a lot easier to remove and replace than that butyl crap that makes a serious mess , especially in any hot climate as it can actually run out from under the plastic/door panel .
There are cheaper versions of that style tape , but I can say they do not clean up well if you have to remove them - getting the adhesive off is a real pain without damaging the underlying paint .

We have all heard the phrase, "If it aint broke, don't fix it!"....Well, I don't always adhere to that. However, I do always adhere to this saying, "If it is broke, fix it!" My non functional blunt lighter now works.

Loaded up my Tacoma with some nice FJ40 parts and pieces. I'll be heading to Simpsonville, SC in the morning. I'll get to meet the famous "Mr. Trollhole" and other LC enthusiasts.
Never been to a "Swap Meet" before. Thus I'm looking forward to doing something I've never done before.
Oh, I would have loaded up my trailer to my FJ40, but I'm toting some glass.
